Im planning on buying myself a Media Player under R1000. It is always a hassle to unplug my whole computer and move it to the living room just to connect it to the TV. So I have decided enough is enough. Its time to take action :D

Im interested in buying the Compro NMC950:

The only thing I would like to know before I proceed with the purchase is If I would be able to browse the internet on my TV through the Media Player and do stuff like stream Youtube videos, listen to internet radio and look at photos on my Facebook.

What is your experience with the product and is the purchase worth it?

Thanks. But my main question is If I will be able to watch Youtube videos through it on my TV because that would be just awesome. I know other media players like the new one from Seagate is able to do that but I prefer this one more, because of its style and features.

Personally I would go to www.bidorbuy.co.za, search for Media Player and cross reference it with this site : http://www.iboum.com/pr/WDTV2-LIVE.php
Stay away from anything Realtek based, for the price you indicated I would go with the WD Live (it has a Sigma Chipset) and it plays youtube as far as I can tell

The Compro looks nice, but its processor only runs at 300mhz, the WD Live runs at 500mhz

Nothing wrong with Realtek-based media players, they do what they say they do (experience with Mede8er).

Mede8er MX500 Light : R2200, with a realtek 400mhz CPU, 128mb Ram
WD Live : R1000, With a better sigma 500mhz CPU, 512mb Ram
wow, difficult choice

i am no fan to Sigma, but comparing these two chipset against each other the Sigma is a little better, i will still say at the end of the day the best choice will be an HTPC, i just built this for R2900 :
i3 3.1Ghz 1155
Intel MB with HDMI out, Dvi Out, optical Out
4gb DDR3 1333 Ram
Box with 400W psu
wireless Mouse + Keyboard
MCE remote control

I'll say it again: Nothing wrong with Realtek-based media players, they do what they say they do (experience with Mede8er).

A little analogy comparing the Mede8er with other media players:

Polo Vivo 1.6 - R130,000
New Polo 1.6 - R180,000

Both cars have the same engines, but you tell me which is more classy. ;)

Mede8er still looks the best. And as I've said, it does everything it says it does.

The WDTV Live looks awesome..BUT it has no on board Torrent software that looks very convenient and the option to add a internal HDD [I can live with it but the strike 2 gave me the red light, Im looking forward to the downloading media from media player while my PC is off option :P]

Edit: Seems to me like I will be able to stream audio and video from the internet through the NMC 950

I will just have to make peace with its slow Realtek 300MHz Processor :)

Where did you guys get the chip set info on the NMC 950? Because I have not found a single webpage telling me that it has a Sigma 300Mhz...? What is a good webpage to read reviews on Multimedia Players?

look at your right hand side, it has every media player you can think of, if its not listed, its not worth it

Can someone please explain to me what real world difference its gonna make if its a realtek or a sigma. It doesnt make a difference. Like PP said... as long as it gets the job done!

I've got the 950 and its the most awesome little machine Ive ever had. yes the Mede8er is also damn good, its just a bit more sleek and fancy. But you pay a lot more for that.

The Compro kicks ass, so if you dont have cash to hand out for the Mede8er then the compro wins hands down

Still wondering myself. They do everything they are advertised to do.

That is for the Compro 1000...

From the site:
However we would be looking for a more modern chipset and t2 HD DVB-T in a new player. The Compro 1000 is expensive cosidering the chipset used.

On the Mede8er:
South African Realtek 1073 player that is notable for being the first Realtek player to have an HD user interface and one of the first to implement YAMJ. Performance and format support are the usual Realtek very good.

I think the site you suggested, suggests that the Realtek is better.

I don’t know how you came to that conclusion, the Compro uses the very first HD sigma chipset released, when they say it’s expensive they are referring to other Sigma Chipsets that’s available (Sigma is and has always been a more expensive chipset than realtek) Kinda like Intel and AMD

Im not going to argue with you guys, if Mede8er fulfills all your needs and you can honestly say you are happy with your player, well then good for you! ;) (just keep in mind you have one of the most expensive players with the cheapest chipset and don’t forget the measly 128mb Ram )

Me, im done with media players, complete waste of money :)

edit: nowhere does it say Realtek is better http://www.iboum.com/artkill/chipsets.php
