I am starting to think I have made a grave mistake, I bought a Pirelli router thinking I can use it to create a wifi hotspot using my mobile device. I do not have adsl, is it possible?

If your pirelli router has 3g failover then yes you can plug in your mobile usb modem and configure the router to distribute 3g instead of adsl.
What is the router model?

Recommendation below.
D-Link DWR-730 (Wi-Fi only router. Small and has a internal battery so still portable)
D-Link 2750U (4 Lan port Wi-Fi router with usb port for 3g failover so you can still be mobile when needed by unplugging the modem)
