Nothing speaks more to the absolute total incompetence of Vodacom and MTN than their use of Huawei Home Gateway routers.
This device ranks as the worst device I have ever had the displeasure of using and has resulted in millions of lost revenue because of its bad quality. If the operators had any integrity they would issue a general recall and refund customers.
It clamps udp packets to 576 bytes instead of 1500 bytes in what I can only assume is an attempt by the firmware to eavesdrop on your connectivity instead of connect you to the Internet. Rather use a hammer and moer it stukkend.
Goedkoop is duurkoop.

At least I can speak from experience.
The older Huawei routers were okay. The B315 series in particular.
The newer ones are the ones that are rank shyte and exhibit all these anomalies and poor performance.
As the OP pointed out they are likely spying on the user for the CCP.

Post me a pic.
Operators install Huawei because the suits were sold via an excel spreadsheet and not circuit boards.
When I worked for a cellphone cartel back in 14 everything was Huawei because the Chinese forced their way in, it goes back further than my short stint in the cartel
