iPhone is the [best/worst] device ever

I'll take one, thank you ...

Not big on cell phones (current phone is an i-mate SP3, no Java, bought over a year ago second hand from Crash Crusaders and it's doing just fine) BUT I love my iPod, gadgets and the idea of having an OS X derived "goodie" in my pocket.

Use MS stuff as my primary computing platform. Have a raft of OS X Macs @ work to do stuff like video editting, publishing, so on. And I have an OS X dual boot partition on my Win Laptop (A "Hackingtosh" ) OS X rocks!

So, I want one. Don't care about or want 3G on my phone, I have 3G as a "backup" on my Laptop. WiFi Hotspot at home, at work.

Have I convinced myself? Sure

Now if only someone would tell me how to "network unlock" the thing ...

I can't, because i haven't tried it. In the review you can "type" with the single button combined with the touchscreen keyboard faster than on a traditional non-qwerty phone. So it's somewhat unconventional to not have -any- [bar the single main button] buttons on the phone and having to manage it all with
the on-screen stuff. So i can't judge it until i've tried it , but of course it still doesn't beat a proper qwerty keyboard.

Moot point - all camera phone cameras are crap.

Most of those other points are fairly bogus. Of course it uses a proprietary Os, much like palm uses their os and others use windows mobile.

Sure, but if i'm paying R6k+ for a "multimedia device" then it's reasonable to expect at least a 5 Megapixel camera , especially if there is a market trend already. My reasoning being: If you're making a premium product , do it properly or don't do it all and drop the price instead.

Palm Os/Windows Mobile etc got lots of mobile/online support going for apps and such. The OS-X mobile probably have -zero- and it might grow depending on the popularity of it, but right this instant, i would wait a bit.

I don't use MMS either, it's an important thing because i know Vodacom/MTN is pushing this tech. [or rather they were last i checked]. So odds are they wouldn't be too keen to sell [or even support] phones that do not fit their strategy or technologies.

No games? They'll come just like they did on the ipod.

They all say there is a learning curve but that it is completely unlike any other touch screen. Looking at the videos I'd have to agree. It seems you really have to trust it to anticipate what the word you're typing is.

If youre paying r6k you're already paying r2k more than anyone else. Anyway Google megapixel myth - cramming more pixels in means nothing.

As for not loading new apps and such, looks like it might change if the hackers have their way:

The thing many interested hacker waited for happened not even 24 hours after the iPhone was released. The Firmware image is for download, and guess what, directly from an apple webserver! Now let's see how much OSX, iPhone really is. The iPhone intrested hackers are at it already.

So i will wait and see.

I'm using the "traditional-rip-off" South African currency conversion factor. The 8GB is $600, so multiply by 10 . Since i can't expand the thing with SD cards and such, if i had to buy one i would get the 8GB one .

Yeah - that one. Not sure how much I'm going to like the keyboard after the full qwerty on the 7290 but the missus says she'll be happy to take it off my hands
