So I got home yesterday and couldn't access the internet. Rebooted the router and it was able to connection to my ISP (Axxess) but I was still unable to access any websites. I even checked on the Axxess CP and it shows me as connected.

I couldn't even ping google.com so went on to try two other accounts (1gig free Afrihost account and a complimentary 40gig account from Vox) and both accounts connect but I still can't access the web.

Axxess has logged a call with Telkom but is it possible that it's some setup issue on my side. The internet was working just fine when I left for work yesterday morning but in the afternoon it was dead.

Can you ping 8.8.8.8?

If you can then it's a DNS problem.

If not, then you line needs to be verified.

Yes it doesn't make sense that it needs to be verified again...but I've had this happen to lines that worked for years at least three times now.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try this as soon as I get back home.

I currently have the unotelly SA server's DNS on my router so I'll change it back to the defaults from Axxess and see if that could be the issue.

SOunds like dns use the google dns servers

8.8.4.4
4.4.4.4

8.8.8.8 is a google dns cache server

So I just changed the DNS to the Google DNS (8.8.4.4 and 4.4.4.4) and I still couldn't access the Internet.

Pinged 8.8.4.4 and I got request timed out and 100% packet loss.I guess I'll have to wait for the technician to give some feedback as it doesn't seem to be my DNS.

Change your DNS back to default setting.

If this occurs, please check the IP address you received. If it is 212.212.212.*, that is an IP given due to some authentication problem.

In this case, wait until about 10 minutes past the next hour, and reset the modem.

This kinds of problems can be caused by migrating DSLAMs to ME backhaul and/or cutting the over to new BNGs.

So I tried the Telkom guest account and it connected but I wasn't able to access the Telkom website so my problem still persists. The IP address I've gotten is 165.145.xxx.xxx which also doesn't seem unusual.

I'm going to call Axxess again in the morning to find out if the technician has been sent out yet given that it's now 2 straight days without Internet and I'm getting somewhat impatient.

Thanks to everyone who helped with my problem. Woke up this morning and my internet is working plus my line is now syncing at 20mbps down and 2mbps up. I guess the Telkom technician must have finalized my VDSL upgrade sometime yesterday.

Lol.

Same happened to a mate of mine. In his case he didn't have the VDSL router yet which is why nothing was working.

For the past 2 weeks my Telkom adsl is a mess, not worth R500 a month. Changing DNS is a waist of time, sometimes pages just keeps loading & timeout.
