My Cell C connection is freezing! (21.6Mbit usb modem) I think it's completely random, but I'm not sure.
After being connected for a certain amount of time, the connection will appear to continue sending, but will not receive at all (according to the windows modem thing)

I think the problem could be either my PC hardware or software though. But how can I fix it? reinstall?

GA-P35-DS3R
E6750
500W psu

Win7 x86 7600, no updates installed AFAIK

any ideas?

When this happens, are you able to browse to the Cell-C website?

This update should help, at least for XP SP2, not sure for win7
KB925681

I had/have and issue on a Win7 64bit machine when I plug the 21 speedstick directly in into the pc. It does connect but then sort-of loops through installing and uninstalling itself.

Spoke to the CellC tech guy at the launch and he said there is an older driver that sorts this out on the Cell C site under the drivers section.
I dont have an issue on a Vista machine but he acknoweldged that there are cases were Win 7 has issues.

Let me just say i have not tried this driver though, as I resolved my Win7 issue by connecting the speedstick to a router then to pc through a lan cable. Works like a charm now.
Link to their site
http://www.cellc.co.za/internet/drivers

Click the download link
Theres only one speedstick driver there, and again, I have not tested this, but the tech guy pointed me in this direction.

OK mine doesn't do any of this re-installing stuff... the software works perfectly. But it freezes.... I can't go for half an hour without it freezing.

And no, when it freezes, you can still send, but you can't receive anything AT ALL. NOTHING. NO PING. NO TCP, no UDP, not anything. It's a complete FREEZE.

UPDATE:

okay BAD BAD NEws now, it wasn't detecting the modem any more, so I was looking in the settings, and all of a sudden my pc BSOD'd!!!! first time this year! :O

How can I get it to re-detect the modem?

Instal in different usb port if you havent already tried, but it sounds like you have a conflict somewhere.

I tried a different usb port... the software didn't like it at all, ... and when i tried putting it back in the original, it froze, wouldn't work, and when it unfroze, i went to settings, and then my pc BSOD'd (first time this year)

And yes, some conflict.
Sometimes it freezes when i start downloading fast. So if I just surf lightly, then it takes longer before it freezes ...

Yup, I'm not the right person to really help with this but aybe try instal that other driver and see if it improve, if not you can roll back.

Ok I'm trying... where do they get that version number, mine looks much bigger. Mine says Cell C 16.001.06.06.368. For the modules, all versions are 1.01

What is your version ?

Funny enough but I have had the same issue with iBurst for very long time now. It happens only during the day. If I disconnect and connect again, it's fine until the next freeze. With MTN 3G haven't seen it and I thought this is only limited to iBurst's wireless network.

I have the same dashboard version as you, but this driver is specific I think to the speedstick as indicated by the CellC tech guy. Like I said, I have not tried it myself and resolved my issues by using a router rather than direct plug in to usb.

It is why I suspected a buggy Windoze USB driver.
Again there is a fix: KB925681

thanks sajunky. It explains my problem almost exactly, and it says for windows 7 too. I am trying it.

UPDATE: Have downloaded and installed it, but it's still freezing :(

RESOLVED

Good news! I think it's fixed! After installing KB 925681, it didn't fix it... So then I thougth of looking at my av to see if it was monitoring any tcp.... and it was, it was monitoring http, p2p, IM, network, etc... So I turned them all off, and presto, it didn't freeze after that! :D

My av is avast.

So I think a combo of disabling the av monitoring options, and the hotfix solved it. Thanks for the help all, esp. sajunky! :)

Glad it is working now. Good to know about antivirus stuff too. :-)

PS. In my setup (Win XP SP2) the driver usbser.sys was updated, but it is not loaded.

How does one go about installing these 'hotfixes' ? I have tried downloading two now (one from a prior thread and one given directly to me by Cell C support) and when clicking on the executables nothing runs. That's obviously just a localised problem on my PC? (Win7 64-bit) Considering just reformatting my PC.

Maybe it goes on colission course with antivirus? Account with admin rights?

Could try some, or a combination in this list, hope it helps:
  • Make sure you have the one for 64 bit
  • Try disabling antivirus?
  • Look in task manager after opening it, and see if it's running. Give it a chance to run, a good several minutes.
  • Run as admin?
  • Restart, then try running it without starting any other applications.
  • Try running it with your internet or network disconnected.
  • Look in "Event Viewer", and see if it's logging anything. If so, post here, or google.
