currently have an 8mb connection, although it is AWESOME I think it is rather overkill for just me and my girlfriends needs.

Questions:
1. Will I be able to play games whilst she browses the internet without fcking up my ping?
2. I have grown used to streaming just about everything at up to 720P. Will 1mb connection have to buffer like mad for even 240P?
3. Does telkom still charge a downgrade fee?

rather downgrade to a 4mbps line if you have to downgrade. A 1mb line has a download speed of +- 100kb/s.

How would that help exactly? Stupid suggestion, seeing as 4mbps costs exactly the same as 8mbps as it's the same product...

OP, you're going to struggle a bit with 1mbps. HD streaming goes out the window. You'll probably notice your gf loading content-rich webpages while gaming, which will pick up as ping spikes.

I don't think you'll manage.

I upgraded to 1mbps and it was a great improvement over 384k but some youtube videos still stop to buffer.

1) No. Even with an 8Mbps connection, browsing will mess up your game < This really depends on what kind of browsing you're talking about. If it is browsing forums, then you'll be fine. If it is browsing Facebook/YouTube, then your game would lagg.
2) With a 1Mbps line you should be able to stream 320p videos without buffering, depending on your ISP account of course. 480p videos will require a small amount of buffering
3) No, Telkom won't change a downgrade fee. The downgrading will be pro-rata, which means that if you're going to downgrade in the middle of the month, you'll be paying 50% of the 4-10Mbps fee and 50% of the 1Mbps fee at the end of that month.

I wish I could upgrade my 384 line to a 1Mbs.

@OP, don't downgrade!

Seriously, there's no such thing as overkill when it comes to the speed of your connection. The faster the better. You will regret downgrading.

Clearly you guys have way too much money...

Overkill is possible on Internet connections - like when your HDD's can't keep up with your download speed :D

1Mbps is more than enough for the general home user.

True, having experienced 4Mbps at work for 5 months, and high speed 8ta. Don't think I can settle with 1Mb, or perhaps I will because of my budget.

I'm one of the lucky one's who is connected to a 10Mbps exchange. I'm currently paying about R1000 per month for my internet connection (Line rental + 50gig Afrihost account) and I can safely say that I would rather starve and cut back every other expense in my life before I would ever consider downgrading my ADSL line. But that's just me :)

i mate of mine went from 10mb line with WA redhat special to 1 mb with uncapped not even 2 weeks later he was back to 10mb line

Stay on 8mb line :-)

+ 1

Line rental is roughly R200 more than one would pay for a 1mb line. Doesn't make sense. 1/8 of the speed for 50% less.... Roughly. At R400 odd per month a 8mb/10mb line is excellent value.

bwahahaha Are you the Telkom CEO?

The line rental of 4-10Mbps lines are like R130 more than 1Mbps lines, but the problem comes in when you want uncapped / accounts with more than 50GB/month.

I fully agree.

OP, you can always downgrade and see for yourself, if your not happy, upgrade again in a few months.
