Considering iPad 9: share your experience please

I use this iPad for drawing on ProCreate and this one is perfect for it. I shopped around for a bit and was hesitant as this is one of the cheapest iPad options, but it is perfect for the job. Great size, runs smoothly, works well with my digital pencil, and is also great to watch things on.

I've got an iPhone 13 which also has the 60Hz refresh rate. 120Hz would be very nice but, price. :sneaky:

The Logitech combo keyboard is a better buy and price. I picked one up last month and it’s far better than the overpriced Folio.

Since you have iCloud I doubt you’ll really have a space problem.

So, I took a look at the Mini storage. Bear in mind this is currently pretty much a media consumption device.

Just for a comparison, my MBA, 13", Intel i5:

This got me thinking.

I use my MBA as a mobile computing device because it has a proper keyboard, small and light, good battery life and so on. No really heavy use otherwise. Also do around six Keypoint training presentations a year, using a data projector.

Would an iPad Air 256Gb with a decent detachable keyboard be a decent replacement for the MBA? Reading up, seems it is quite possible to hook this up to a data projector and presentation remote. If I traded in or sold the MBA, this would make the iPad Air an option price wise.

It irks me no end to have obsolete or under utilised devices cluttering my life. I always try and buy devices, tools implements etc that have multiple applications.

What are you guys' thoughts?

I disagree.

It’s just too much with the keyboard, too big and cumbersome, unless you really want it as a primary device to type on.

The simplicity of the Folio is what makes it great and the fact the form factor doesn’t change at all, it just gets protection and added usability.

I can’t for instance use the Logitech in my kitchen.

Going by my 12 year old iPad 2 folio cover it will likely outlast the Logitech as well or at least look much better than it will over time.

I have no concept of how pricing compares, it’s somewhat irrelevant to the equation. I did buy mine in the US though which likely makes it far more palatable.

Is this on the iPad 9 64Gb? How storage hungry is Procreate? I don't have need for that specific app but just to get an idea.
 
According to iStore trade-in estimate, R3000 for the Mini and R7000 for the MBA. I know they are like used car salesmen, so let's say I end up getting R8000 for both, makes an iPad Air a possible option. IF, it could replace my MBA as a worthy mobile computing device.

I doubt you'd get more than the estimated value (at iStore).

I actually did a bit of an experiment to see if I could manage my day job on just an iPad and it was actually pretty successful with my biggest issue relating to authentication issues with a Yubikey and needing to run that off device.

There are a lot of compromises to be made all round though.

No “case” keyboard will be as good as a MacBook or stand alone Apple Keyboard. Not even the Apple ones. They come pretty close but it is a compromise, so if you have an Apple Keyboard and Mouse/Trackpad that may be an easy win for you.

Keypoint I assume is supposed to be Keynote and that’s near identical. Your only problem there would be needing an adaptor or projector that supports Airplay.

Personally if I had a MacBook Air I would always prefer that as my primary device and use the iPad in a supplementary fashion, so if it came down to MacBook Air + cheap iPad vs expensive iPad I would rather have both.

Because it’s massive and takes up a huge amount of space so can’t be balanced where I stand it up now without moering off or taking up useful space.

It would also be a mess of flour and food stuffs and grease very quickly.

Unless I’m thinking of the wrong product here the only mode is keyboard out and wide open isn’t it? Like a laptop.

With the folio the stand is tucked away and the iPad is screen forward says to access while taking up minimal space.

You’re thinking of the wrong product I think.

Keyboard is detachable and you can adjust the angle of the iPad on a flat surface to any degree you want.
