Johannesburg - Eskom on Thursday urged consumers to switch off all non-essential appliances to reduce the impact of rotational power cuts.

"Eskom calls on consumers to urgently switch off geysers, pool pumps, and all non-essential appliances throughout the day," it said in a statement.

Power cuts would be stopped if the necessary savings were made and the situation improved.

"Eskom will provide regular updates on the status of the power system through all media platforms."

Customers were warned to treat all electrical connections as live during the cuts.

The power cuts were announced earlier and were scheduled to last from 09:00 to 22:00.

Eskom customers were advised to check on its website for the schedule.

"Municipal customers need to contact their own municipalities for the correct schedules."

Earlier on Thursday, Eskom spokesman Andrew Etzinger said seven days of heavy rain had left coal stocks wet.

"We have asked our large industrial customers to reduce their consumption by 10% but it appears this will not be enough," Etzinger said.

My ears are burning from reading the comments on that article. :wtf:
People are pissed off.

Uh, listen you ESKOM DUMBF**KS
HOW THE F**K MUST I REDUCE MY CONSUMPTION WHEN ALREADY I USE AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE!!!
F*kken dom bliksemse moere

A short while back... " we need to increase electricity prices as demand isn't as high as we want"
now... " reduce your electricity consumption, we can't meet demand"

I've yet to see a company as inept as Eskom.

power out in midrand, looks like load**** level 3, so who knows how long, ****ing waste of a days work.

OUt in Highveld Centurion, got freakin' huge gennies so carry on with work

Ag Eskom being so boring....we already saving as much as we can, and we pay enough for electricity :(

What about the countries Eskom supplies power to? Do they also go experience the load shedding we getting?

No, are you crazy? Otherwise the illegals won't vote cancer, if their cheaper power is cut.

Why doesn't Eskom just keep their coal stock in a warehouse instead of outside?? Am I missing something?

It gets used to quick to store in closed spaces, also cost to transport to storage may push elec prices up more.

Maybe they should get a few tips from England.

They won't remember they do not like the colonialists.

Been watching our notifications, worst I've ever seen with cities dropping off the map as power goes out and generators kick in.

And in two months time they will tell us:

Because the power consumption is so low we need to raise our rates.

Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa.

“We expect the rains will subside and, as they subside, obviously we’ll be back to normal. That’s the timeline we’re more or less expecting to have a return to normality,” Molewa said.

She said the situation could not be called a crisis at this stage.

“We obviously would be having some hitches here and there in households.

“It’s already been indicated that there’s been some load shedding in some poorer areas of Gauteng and Cape Town but it is important to really just make this call [that] if we all save energy as we should, it is highly likely that we can save much more so there isn’t any suffering in terms of the business areas where operations are taking place.”

What is this woman on ?!

If any private business gave their CEO's and upper management these type of pay raises, and they still perform as badly as ESKOM they would be fired, wouldn't they?

Why is ESKOM getting away with it?

Why can't we still not sell power back to ESKOM like in civilized countries?

If they can't provide enough power, but they block private individuals and companies from providing power back to the grid, who is at fault?

Consumers can help Eskom by not voting ANC anymore, they caused this cr@p in the first place by refusing to heed the warnings in the late '90's.
