Parliament's communications committee has selected the eight candidates whom it wants to be councillors at the country's ICT regulator, the Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA).

While four were elected unanimously, opposition parties have indicated their unhappiness with the remainder.

The four unanimously elected nominees are: Robert Nkuna, a former Department of Communications spokesperson; Kedibane Annah Serero-Chiloane, head of the projects services division at the Universal Services Agency; Andrew Barendse, an assistant professor of regulatory affairs in Holland; and Kobus van Rooyen, chairman of the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of SA.

Marcia Socikwa, a regulatory affairs academic at Unisa, received eight votes, with two DA and one FF+ votes opposing her nomination.

The weight of the ANC majority carried the remainder of the nominees onto the list, with all the opposition parties voting against them. They are: Mamodupi Mohlala, who is seeking a second term as an ICASA councillor; Brenda Ntombela, Department of Communications chief director; and Mashila Matlala, a Department of Communications senior manager for telecommunications policy.

Randy Pieterse, also of the ANC, said: “There are a lot of good people who were nominated. However, with the workload that ICASA now faces, we selected candidates who can work as part of a team.”

Dene Smuts (DA) indicated her party was strongly opposed to some of the candidates, especially those who are currently in the Department of Communications' employ. “We will be asking for time for a [National Assembly] debate on this issue on Tuesday [12 September],” she said.

That's why I never bothered sending in my CV. Debbie2 or myself didn't stand a chance to get in there, we're much too assertive :) & don't like sitting around and nodding and saying yes to everything and not actually achieving anything :(

To be expected, sad though.
ICASA had a chance to regain significant credibility but instead they opted to have Telkom employees sit in on their interviews and put forward names of DoC slaves.

How is it possible that DOC employees can sit as councillors at ICASA??????
IS this not a clear case of a conflict of interests?
 
Don' play... this list isn't even funny. Well, at least the ANC-pushed ones.
 
Just relooking at this - we tend to focus on:

But what of: Andrew Barendse, an assistant professor of regulatory affairs in Holland?

and:

Kedibane Annah Serero-Chiloane, head of the projects services division at the Universal Services Agency

Who be they?

(And how come Esther Dyson - a leading usa light - is on the Prez's council/committee?)
 
Debbie2 actually had only good things to say about Andrew Barendse.
 
Hey all - not unexpected - looking at the list I had expected 6 of the 8 names to make the cut.

On the positive side, I'm extremely glad to see Andrew Barendse made the cut, and was supported by all the parties. I have a very good feeling about him. His CV says a lot in what it doesn't say, if you know what I mean by that.

I have a (one-degree seperation) personal connection to one of the other candidates who I will not name, but I will say that their nomination is a good thing.

As for this- "We selected candidates who can work as part of a team” - one of the questions that was asked of virtually all candidates was something to the effect of "What would you do if there was heavy outside interference affecting the independence and workings of ICASA?" I am told that, as at the time of my interview, not one of the candidates had replied that they would resign in protest. (I think I was the 17th or 18th candidate interviewed - I was not asked this question). My point here is simply to re-emphasise the political nature of these appointments- make no mistake, there is not much room on the Council for independence of will.

As for this scatlett- "its an experience that will help her in the rest of her career"- hehe, I just want to say that this is not the end- it's the beginning - I am only getting started in what I intend to do :) [Be afraid, be very afraid :D]

dominic- the committee is aware of the MyADSL request to participate on the advisory panel. Let's now see....

I reserve comments on my general feelings here til after the final 5 are selected.

In the meantime, watch this Barendse candidate, I really think he's our guy.
 
Well done Debs... Ever thought about approaching NeoTel for a job there. Then you could really get under telkoms skin :D
