Convertibles

I would go straight for the s2000 if it was in my price range. Yeah Fazda my ex had a hardtop convertible (merc e350 and peugeot 207II)

I loved driving with the top down - and CT is relatively safe - she hasnt had any break ins yet

ALL convertibles are capable of giving you hassles in that way.

A convertible in SA is just plain madness - in summer it's too hot to run with the roof down - in winter you don't want to, and then there's the fact that you cannot drive through a city with your roof down, as some ****** is going to zap you. You also cannot park outside your favourite restaurant without paying an armed guard to see that nobody slashes your roof whilst you are sipping red wine.
throttling

That and they are bad for combovers :D

MX-5 dude .. been driving my 2004 NB for the past four years now. Don't think I'll ever sell it, almost broke out in tears the past few weeks when mine was in for some minor body repairs. That car simply changed the way I look at vehicles in general, years of ownership and I'm still always looking for a reason to drive it... RWD, High RPM, Double wishbone suspension, lightweight, tons and tons of aftermarket parts if you feel like going there... Mine could do with some more power (1.8L) but truth be told I never find myself racing from A-B, it's more a drive-the-snot-out-of-twisties car

The PRHT (2007+) version is nice, but actually the 2006 NC with the soft top has the best power to weight and the soft top on that car is awesome, I actually prefer the soft top look, especially if you can find the dark brown soft top with charcoal metallic.
Personally though, this will always be the best looking one:

Don't say I didn't warn you!

You mad bro.

Err.... No.

You mad bro.

Fazda is just a little sauerkraut that he has never been able to own one. It's easier to break a window if you want to get into a car. My wife had a convertible and she loved every second of it. Pity it was a Peugeot, don't go French! :D

would have definitely said the Honda S2000 if it was in the price range but it wasnt so MX-5 it is! You could get a decent 2005 S2000 for slightly more than your price range?

No he's not! :)

I hate bloody convertibles for all the reasons I have given.

They are more hassle than they are worth. :)

Have you ever owned one? If the newer ones were cheaper we'd buy another one in a heartbeat. And we had the most hassle-full Peugeot you can imagine!

My wife is sometimes a hassle. She can be demanding, high-maintenance and emotional. But let me tell you, when you take that baby out for a drive and everything clicks, it's beautiful. But you have to own one to understand.

Of course I haven't owned one, for all the reasons I have stated ad nauseum.

I have driven them in Cape Town and in Joburg, and nothing happened during those periods that changed my mind.

Please note, once again, that I said that I personally wouldn't own one - no need to get your knickers in a knot if you think they are the best thing since sliced bread - bully for you - I don't.

If you've never owned one, to say specifics like it's impossible to drive with the top down in summer is bloated with undeserved bias. If there was a convertible Subaru I'm convinced you would have punted it. Now get outta here, you brand loyal heathen!

Now you are, once again, trolling.

I delivered a convertible two days ago off our floor, and I don't like driving them.

Now put that up your pipe and do whatever you want to with the information.

Now now... :D to each their own -

Maybe I'll keep an eye out for an s2000, will have to wait a little longer then - what would an s2000 be like as a daily though?

That's not what you said. You said it's too hot to drive with the top down in summer and you have to be paranoid because every second criminal will try and slash your roof. You know what my grandma would have said. "Nou praat jy twak". And that really sums it up.

Oh god you need English comprehension lessons. What part of not liking them doesn't equate to that?

They are uncomfortably hot in summer, as I'm not into sun bathing whilst I drive, and yes, crawl through city traffic and your chances are somebody will try and rip you off, and as for roof slashing - be my guest and leave your convertible unattended outside some restaurant in any SA city - this is the country where people are warned not to let their windows down in city traffic FFS, and I'm now paranoid because I don't happen to enjoy risking my property.

I think the idea with convertibles is that you drive them 90% roof up, and then on weekends or at the coast or on a long freeway trip take the top down and enjoy the fresh air. For all the other times, its aircon on, top up, windows closed, just like any other car.

Quite true.
