Convertibles

Oh god you need English comprehension lessons. What part of not liking them doesn't equate to that?

They are uncomfortably hot in summer, as I'm not into sun bathing whilst I drive, and yes, crawl through city traffic and your chances are somebody will try and rip you off, and as for roof slashing - be my guest and leave your convertible unattended outside some restaurant in any SA city - this is the country where people are warned not to let their windows down in city traffic FFS, and I'm now paranoid because I don't happen to enjoy risking my property.

Drove it with the roof down and parked outside restaurants for 5 years without a single issue. And now? I'd really love to hear where you get the idea your roof will be slashed. Maybe you had a friend of a friend that had an uncle that this happened to once?

Apart from my own experience, not once have I ever seen I convertible drive by with it's roof in tatters. I'd love to hear from the other's that have owned a convertible if they have ever experienced this, cause it sounds like BS. Like I said, easier to just smash out the window than cut through all the layers and get in through the roof. Jy praat twak, pappie!

Hmm...been owning and using a convertible for years now and never had an issue... on the contrary, when it comes to things like hijacking etc. I feel insanely safe in my MX-5, I mean, why would anyone want to hijack a TWO seater convertible where the parts have almost no market out there and where you stand out like a sore thumb?

Unless I'm wrong of course and I've just been lucky. The only irritant is that there's no hiding from beggars when you stop at an interchange with the top down :D

As for the weather thing ... :wtf:.... say whaaaat?!?! We have some of the best weather in the world, a convertible is definitely the way to go! Of course you're going to burn if you drive around in the middle of summer without a hat at least, that's not the point. Winters here are actually perfect for driving top down, and few things beat early morning and late afternoon drives with the top down, I don't care if people think I look like a twat! It's awesome!
The GF and I actually plan the few off days we have off during the year around routes we can take the MX on. And for some reason even though the cockpit is small the seats are insanely comfortable, and the handling dynamics of the car is such that you don't get sleepy behind the wheel.

The EOS was one of my top options for hardtop convertibles - heard they often have problems with roof mechanics though

Not sure about EOS but my 335i convertible hardtop has not given me any roof mechanics issues. The only problem I have is I open my convertible many times and drive short distances to work. That turns to discharge the car battery quicker than it can recharge itself from driving.

I often park my convertible with roof down when I'm next to resturant or even in Braamfontein when I visit my barber. The only problem is people admiring it, asking me to close/open it. :D

Hmmm ... word of advice when buying a convertible. It's usually better to stick to one that was designed to be a convert. from the ...errr... top down :P. Cut the roof off a car that's designed to be a coupe and you end up with body flex issues etc.

Pretty much decided on mx5 - cheaper to maintain, decent daily drive and it seems the concensus is that it has the best reliability.

I'll post pics when I buy :D

You won't be sorry :)
Just be careful with servicing and parts in future once you get one. These local okes are bastards when it comes to pricing. You can order parts etc. from sites like RSpeed.net and MossMiata...

Depending on how long you can wait you MIGHT be able to get away with one even cheaper once Mazda announces the next generation (I've been waiting ages but I think it'll happen soon).
Mazda's doing the guts and Alfa Romeo's in charge of the styling, can't wait to see what they come up with.

Make sure you have someone that knows about cars to look at it with you or take it for an AA test. People like to drive these cars "enthusiastically" :D

how much do s2000's go for?

that car has pretty much established itself amongst enthusiasts although I'm not sure of the pricing these days

Alfa styling is always great, very keen to see what the new one looks like.

How safe are convertibles in a roll over accident? I have nightmares thinking that if your car flips over the windscreen with fold flat down and you head will turn into a plough.

they come with roll bars that pop up like the crash balloons
