Just guessing here but this proprietary software probably allows him to record the video feed of the tools he uses like during a sigmoidoscopy etc

No man, not Windows 7... it's for the medical camera recording technology.
It connects to USB and then gets inserted deep into the patients ear, while he does procedures.

So why's he being a cheapskate?

Buy a new setup and be done with it.

So much bother for what, in his line of business, is a trivial expense.

I don't know offhand. I'm going back to his office in a few hours.
He did say that a new license for Win7 is about 6 grand, so that's why he wants to keep using his old license.
It's working for him as is... except that this old PC is about to die any day now.

Get the name & version of the software as well as the camera, for all you know it might even run on Win7 even if it's in compatibility mode
