Cool Ideas Fibre ISP – Feedback Thread 4

Thing is that it's been on 1480 for years - no issues - last day or two I'm suddenly picking up issues - PBCool suggested that it sounded like MTU issue (I've already excluded DNS as a factor (using the Cool Ideas supplied IP's) - based on testing I don't think it's MTU

Real head-scratcher since I haven't made any changes to the hardware on my side (Mikrotik RB2011 router + Netgear PoE switch + Unifi AP's + Cloudkey
It's possible something has changed on FFs side, if your PPP isn't dropping it's either small bursts of loss which if you run a continuous ping should identify. Or it's MTU/device related

Are you running malwarebytes?
I'm running Avast antivirus but not malwarebytes. I tried disabling Avast and also disabling Windows Firewall but it didn't change much on the first hop. But if PBCool is saying it's a bit of a non-issue then I suppose it's fine?

Try change your pingplotter interval time to 2ms i find if i put it on 1ms it shows packet loss on my first hop

I presume that I should run WinMTR for (how long?)

Could you suggest an IP address I should Itarget?

Also, should we take this to PM?

Dear Octotel Clients,

Octotel Engineers will be performing emergency continued node maintenance on our Rondebosch node.
This maintenance will result in certain customers in the area losing connectivity for 5mins. No more than 30 customers will lose connectivity at a time.

The maintenance is to alleviate any potential areas of concern, to ensure all connections are in spec for all customers to experience a stable connection.

Please see dates and time of the maintenance schedule below:

Date: Tuesday - Thursday, 7th- 9th September 2021
Start time: 01:00am - 05:00am
Duration: 5 hours

The maintenance is scheduled to alleviate all out of spec connections in the following area: Harfield Village - core 3 fibre infrastructure. Our Engineers will be on site to ensure down time is kept to an absolute minimum.

@PBCool Do you guys perhaps have some spare capacity to carry some Google traffic to London and peer with them there instead

Google Finland ping for Cape Town via their transit is 230ms which is worse than New York, normal ping to Finland via a speedtest is around 177 so difference is rather large

And via VPN?

Here is a random server in Finland, Apex in the evening keeps putting us on these servers during peak hours and ping goes from like 215-240ms, rather annoying...

And via VPN?
Uh right forgot about it.. I'll use Cloudflare Warp for these servers rather then, will just add the IP range to that tunnel.

I mean via our VPN, does it improve? As that would give us a better idea.
