Forgive any possible ignorance here but I am battling to get my head around the pricing cool ideas is running on a 10/5 uncapped service through openserve. They say it is unshaped and unthrottled. They are charging R 499 and the nearest competing isp is webafrica at around R 619 and with some serious limitations, namely after about 100GB you are throttled down. I am also on webafrica openserve 200GB at R 719 and most other ISPs are around the same or much more. The pricing gap here just doesnt make sense. Does anyone know if there is a catch somewhere? Also what is the difference to the capped and uncapped products. From what I have seen on web africa if not throttled speeds and performance are about the same.

It is what it says - uncapped and unshaped.

They've been voted the best for a reason.

Although with 4Mbps being dropped, WebAfrica probably needs to update their 10 Mbps pricing...

Openserve announced that the 4/2 accounts will not be available anymore.

I believe Cool Ideas already removed the 4/2 packages and changed the pricing to match those old packages.

The reason I didn't go with web Africa was the the low FUP even on a 100mb line it's something like 300Gb. Cybersmart also has a FUP of 900Gb.

Also depends if you are a heavy user that would be the deciding factor

I signed up for the Cool Ideas 10/5 package through OpenServe in October, back then it was R699.
I see my latest invoice it has now been reduced to R499 - not complaining and been loving CI over the WebAfrica connection I was using previously.

Quality of bandwidth on CI just seems soo much better, I suspect less shaping and better network rules and so forth.

Geez hope they can reduce mine !

They “resell”(sorry if there’s another term ) network access that they bought so whether you use 1gb or 1tb it won’t make a difference to them .Considering that it’s their smallest package it doesn’t put a lot of strain on their network which allows them to sell it at a competitive price

Waking up this conversation quickly. Both Openserve (fibre in the air) and Vumatel (molested my driveway) rolled out in my neighbourhood recently. I am very happy with my uncapped 10mb Telkom ADSL (also have a ISIgnite backup account) but it looks like the R499 Openserve/Cool Ideas package is really good and will save me about R300 per month - can't see any other deal that comes close to it. Most of my neighbours are going for a Vumatel package though and avoiding Openserve.

Are you guys still happy with it? I probably use about 250GB a month mainly streaming DSTVnow, Youtube and Netflix. Is it worth moving to this deal? I know nothing about fibre so this is all a bit new to me.

Depends on the area, it seems. I'm in PTA East and Cool Ideas on OS has been nothing but rock solid for me. I haven't had any experience with Vumatel though

When you are on Openserve it's just like ADSL and you can still keep your ADSL ID Ignite backup account. Any capped/uncapped ADSL account works on Openserve fibre. With Vumatel you are locked to one ISP at a time. Openserve just change the PPPoE details and you are using a backup account which is very nice.

Woah, this is news to me. Does this even apply when I don’t deal with Openserve directly and take the combo deal from Cool Ideas?

Yes, openserve use login details in your router like any adsl account.

Yes it does. It's like having your ADSL line "managed" by an ISP. Exact same with Openserve Fibre. The fibre line will be "managed" by Cool Ideas but you can dial any PPPoE details.

I have a 200Mbps Openserve line with Supersonic and use Vox fatpipe adsl data and 200GB capped adsl data with Cybersmart and they all run at line speed.

Since you are going to get a 10Mbps line you won't worry about speed restricted adsl data much but as you go higher some capped account are limited to 40Mbps. Other than that Openserve fibre is just like ADSL just sooooooo much better.

Perfect, thanks for schooling me. Reckon I need to give them a call. Just want to get clarity on the installation costs from them. Urgh and will also need to cancel my adsl with Telkom, that's probably going to be the biggest challenge.

Most Openserve fibre ISP's includes FREE installation and installation is usually a few days after ordering.
