WATCH | A day in the life of Audi's record-breaking, high-performance RS2 Avant
• The RS2 Avant was exported to SA in very limited numbers.
• It is powered by a turbocharged 2.2-litre engine that makes 232kW and 410Nm.
• Audi currently has a number of RS models on sale locally.
There are cars with certain letters and numbers that evoke a different type of emotion when they are uttered or seen in the flesh.
The likes of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen have their own high-performance models in M, AMG and GTI guise, but Audi takes everything up a notch with the exclusive RS badge.
The RS 3 Sportback is currently the cheapest high-performance model for sale in SA, with a starting price of R1 056 000. The sacred badge also finds itself on models like the Q3, Q8, TT, 4, 5, 6, 7 in Avant, Coupe and Sportback body shapes.
Audi and Porsche made a baby
The RS2 only saw a year on the production line from 1994-1995, and at the time, Audi lacked a fully-fledged high-performance department. This is where the partnership with Porsche comes to fruition.
Components like the brakes, suspension, and seats are Porsche-specific, forming part of the brand's tag-team partnership.
Where the RS 2 is concerned, it was exported to Mzansi in minimal numbers and made use of a turbocharged 2.2-litre engine that produces 232kW and 400Nm. It also employed the famous Quattro system that channelled power to all four wheels.

Opinion: why are we still waiting for electric estate cars?
Battery-powered station wagons are as rare as finding hen’s teeth in rocking horse poo. What gives?
Much like Christmas presents for anyone over three years old, it really does seem that if you’re going to buy a new car, it had better be electrically powered.
And, generally speaking, that’s not a huge dilemma – in fact, it’s wonderful for any number of reasons. You don’t need to worry about huge servicing costs, for instance. You can drive them through city centres anywhere in the world without paying an arm, two legs and a decent amount of torso just to do so. And you can indulge in serious smugness the next time there’s, say, a nationwide panic over petrol shortages.
Also, we’d be remiss not to mention the whole environmental thing, even if – sure as night follows day and bots follow Twitter accounts – it’ll give someone apoplexy about how they’re not akchually good for the environment, et cetera, ad nauseum.
However, there is bad news, even for those of us who don’t view electric-powered transport as a personal insult. Yes, there’s a very real, very large problem with electric cars: where are all the wagons?
An exhaustive (or at the very least, exhausting) search returns only two fully-electric, proper estates currently on sale. At one end, it’s the immensely appealing but intensely expensive Porsche Taycan Cross/Sport Turismo; at the other, it’s an MG that’s decently priced but also as appealing as being robbed at gunpoint.
So, filled with the amount of despair one would expect when your situation could be warbled out by Morrissey, we come to the obvious question: why?
Unfortunately, much like the question of your least-favourite subject in high school, the answer is almost definitely economics. The fact of the matter is that SUVs, crossovers and so on remain extraordinarily popular. As much as car people hate them, as easy a target as they are for a seemingly everlasting font of bile, they still sell like half-price hotcakes.

A sneak preview of what's to come:
The walnut wood trim is certainly an acquired taste, but I think it will grow on me in due course. I'm planning on buying a steering wheel from eBay with flappy paddles, as it's a matter of some simple coding with VCDS to get it linked up, and the wheel itself is cheap enough (±R3000 including shipping).

At long last. I had to compromise some - not a huge fan of the black paint but maybe it will grow on me. But I figured I'm not going to find one that ticks ALL the boxes and this one captured my heart.
It has nice goodies like a towbar, Xenons, PDC and best of all - the RNS-E navigation system and not the awful Audi tape deck that the base models were specced with

Try not to drool over the Alpha Saga Estate
Californian start-up Alpha has added yet more ultra-cool designs to its line-up
Over the last few months Californian start-up Alpha has treated our eyes to several head-turning EVs that look just as home on a bedroom wall poster as they will on an actual road.
If you’ve somehow forgotten (and no one would blame you for blocking out large chunks of 2021) you simply must refresh your memory by revisiting the Ace Coupe, JAX off-roader and the WOLF pickup truck, which TG has been lucky enough to see in the flesh.
There’s even a version with an inflatable tent attachment.
Now there are two more models to nourish your retinas. The first (gallery above) is the Saga Estate, which can be had in ‘Royal Safari’ metallic blue for all-terrain ability, or in ‘Grace’ metallic tan for - judging by the whopping great surfboard on the roof rack - trips to the beach.
Alpha claims a range of 300 miles, with dual-motor setup providing all-wheel drive and tackling the 0-60mph sprint in 6.3 seconds. Rapid charging is standard and battery heating and cooling tech is included too.
At 4,850mm in length the Saga Estate weighs a shade over two tonnes, so it’s not what you’d call light on its feet. There’s room for five people though and Alpha promises premium seat and trim material, a premium sound system and (presumably premium) Bluetooth connectivity.

Mercedes Could Be Killing Off All Wagons By 2030
When it comes to wagons, Mercedes generally does it best and although they have formed part of the brands’ range for decades, it is being reported that they have lost faith in the body style and will ditch all of them from its lineup by 2030.
Automobilewoche claims that the CLA Shooting Brake will be no longer from 2025 with no successor while the E-Class will be the last with no wagon variant for the next generation.
Demand in China and USA, its two largest markets in the world has decreased rapidly so the manufacturer will streamline its offerings because of the big investments it’s making in electric vehicles.
Customers who are after something a little more practical like a wagon will have to look at something like a high-riding SUV-sedan.
We think this may need to be taken with a pinch of salt as we have seen Porsche successfully introduce an electric wagon, the Taycan Cross Turismo.
