Durban - Bheki Cele, national police chief, became infuriated on Tuesday in reaction to an old South African flag on a desk in a Metrorail office.

Cele and Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa were in the city to announce the police's crime-fighting campaign for the holidays.

On his way to a conference hall in the Durban railway station, Mthethwa came to an abrupt stop when he saw the little flag on a desk of a junior Metrorail manager.

He called Cele over immediately. The police chief asked the woman, whose office it is, why the flag was on her desk.

Flag 'is beautiful'

With a large version of the new South African flag taking pride of place on the wall above her, and a Sharks flag in the window, the woman quietly answered that it's something she finds beautiful.

"That's out of order!" Cele called out, and gave the command to have it confiscated.

Damn retards, is there a damn law against the old flag?

Just a with SA Roadlink he is focusing on the wrong things (he focused on the bus roadworthyness while it was the drivers and speeding that was the problem).

it is out of order, the police were actually a well functioning order under the old flag, having it on the desk gives a wrong impression that they are doing their jobs.

Shouldn't it be freedom of expression to display the old flag if you want? And its obvious it was meant with no ill intent, since there are several other more prominent flags already there.
So what give this ****er the right to even question her? She doesn't even belong to the police force.

He should have confiscated the Sharks flag as well.

I guess to some it's like a Nazi swastika

still, if you have a huge flag of the israel flag and a small swastika on your table, i just don't work out the logic. maybe he's like those scary old teachers in school that confiscated anythign that offended them :(

kudos on him picking it up tho, some mighty fine decetive work there

I would have told Cele to take his attitude and fsck off. If Metrorail don't have any policies and procedures surrounding what can and can't be in an office he has no right to demand that it be confiscated.

I have a large old SA flag, it never gets displayed but it is a part of my history so I'm not about to get rid of it simply because it might upset some small minded people.

I think it's perfectly fine to display relics of the old regime in your own house if that's what makes you happy. She should be smart enough to know that displaying those types of things in a (afaik) wholly owned government company would cause problems.

Ps. The picture in the article was quite funny :D

I would question how long the flag has been there though, probably a long time.

Its only little mr small mind Cele that seems to have had an issue with it though.

Actually the flag was there before Apartheid.

I'm curious under which law he confiscated the flag. There might be a profitable lawsuit in this.

The correct way to handle this would have been to call a meeting with HR and her direct superior and have a calm and rational discussion about the fact that her co-workers could be offended by the flag and that the workplace might not be the best place to display it.
