Core i5 versus Core i7

I7 LGA1366 is the way forward as then you can upgrade to the I9 when it comes out at not to much cost.

My Q9550 is still twiddling it's thumbs most of the time. No need to upgrade.

i overclocked my e6600 (2.4gigs) 50% to 3.6 and that still manages just fine:D games generally dont require amazing cpus, assuming ur rig is for gaming

PCF December has the I5 on par if not slightly ahead of the I7 on Gaming performance. It appears gamers need not look further than I5 750?

I personally find it a bit of a overkill to get a I5 or I7 for gaming wouldn't it just be much better getting a phenom 2 and all the money you save from not going I7/I5 putting that rather into a bigger gfx?

Unless of course you have so much money to spend that you can get a I5/I7 and still get a mean gfx with it.

I fully agree with you on that. Actually I am enjoying this a lot - cause when I told people not to go i7 and rather invest in AMD solutions they said they want top performance at all costs. Well now they can keep spending more each time they need to get a new platform for their new CPUs.

At least with AMD you know your platform will last a long time and you can spend your money on stuff that really matters - like memory and gfx.

Just remember not everyone uses their i7 rig for gaming alone, or even uses the excuse of a cool gaming rig for justifying it.

Spending a lot of money replacing your platform each time you upgrade your CPU is just one of them. Plus, you now have less time to waste wondering what you will do with you cash since there will be very little left anyway.

so the i7 is like a porche with a turbo and i5 is without the turbo then?

Not really - they both have turbo but the i7/i9 has 3 of them and the i5/i3 only has 2 of them.

But the i5 also has some new features, eg the ability to overclock one CPU automatically, while slowing the other cores down - this is for applications that don't use the multiple cores.
i7 has auto-overclocking. They called it TurboBoost or something.

ok to be perfectly honest with you, i dont really give a flying carp wtf is under the hood as long as the game runs smoothly. now I must be honest, I always have been an intel processor fanboi however they are starting to annoy the carp out of me with their socket system.

Flippen pick one and stick with it ffs. amd did and i dont see them suffering too much. so therefore one can conclude that 1) it is possible and 2) it cant be that difficult if amd figured it out. so come now mr intel man. make a plan and realise that not everyone earns the same salary as your ceo.

3k for a processor is a bit on the hefty side if it means i need to pay another 2k for board and 2k for ram and then the board dont work with the gfx card so another 2k for one of those. then a year or two later i cant just buy a new cpu , oh no i need to buy a new mobo and ram and gfx as well. fark that. if thats their attitude i gues im going amd from now onwards
