Hi Guys, my trusty Corrolos engin just started making a horrible rumbling sound, think it might be a crank bearing. However thinking of buying a new car and the shortlist is currently Chevy Cruze 1.6l or Toy Corolla 1.4 advance. Any advice on which one is best all round , service plan, cost of maintenance
, reliability, part availability etc please reply thanks

Corolla Will last you 4 ages and its quite comfortable and has a good spec the 1.4 engine is not quite bad anyway the chev is just a rebadged Daewoo

Obvious choice would be the KIA Cerato.

1.6l 93kw 7l/100km
5yr/100 000km service plan & warranty.
16" Alloys (x5)
ABS & EBD
6 airbags
CD/USB/IPod with steering controls.
AC
Electric power steering
Electric mirrors
Electric windows
Front & rear fog lamps

I'm with Brawler on this one.
The Toyota is overpriced, underspecced, underpowered and just plain boring.
There are a lot of other vehicles to choose from but if boring and expensive is what you want then the Toyota will do fine.

If you're buying second hand and get a good deal then it's another matter but I just don't know why people continue to splash money on new Toyota's unless it's a decent model like a Fortuner or one of the Lexus models.

I agree, out of the cruze or corolla it would most definitely have to be the cerato :D

Kia Cerato wins.
Or for something a little more how should i put this... "german"
The new Opel Astra 1.4 its a hatch which might be good

Opel Astra is a great car to but it is R50 000 more than the Cerato, that is a hell of a lot in this segment.

Cerato 1.6l R186k
Cerato 2.0l R205k (incl 114kw, leather, 17", crusie control, climate control etc)
Toyota Corolla 1.4 advance R205k (lol)
Chevrolet Cruze 1.6 LS R196400
Astra 1.4 R238k

If it were my money, I would also definitely have a look at the Kia

Kia has made huge leaps in quality and refinement in the last few years. You really do seem to get a lot of car for your money!

If he were looking at a hatch then it would without a doubt have to be the hyundai i20 ;)

My wife drives a 2007 1.8 Advanced Corolla currently and this is the 3rd generation Corolla we own. I am very happy with this car and it is a totally new vehicle compared to the previous shape. A lot quieter inside, bigger and more stable. It also has a lot less road noise compared to the previous shape. They have improved in all aspects. It is not a "performance" vehicles when compared to other brands, but that's not what I was looking for when buying the vehicle. It has more than enough speed and power though. I do not regret buying this vehicle at all. Very reliable.

My 2c

Cerato is quite a bit smaller than the Corolla or Cruze, if that's a consideration for the OP.

But in terms of resale value the Corolla is the best. Its not new anymore so you can try to haggle for a discount. If I could afford the Corolla then I'd buy the Corolla.

Thanks for all the commentsguys, the Corolla I can get as a demo for R134 000 , is this a good price as I'm so used to Toyota. My old 2001 model Corolla only broke yesterday and this is the first breakdown I ever had with this car in all the 6 years of owning it.

How many KMs on the demo? That is a good price if its less than 15 000kms

Does anybody have any experience with the Corolla M-MT gearbox as I was jst offered the 1.6 advanced for R139.000 but it has the M-MT gearbox(clutchless.

thanx

Please define "quite a bit smaller".
The Cerato's cabin space is larger than the Corolla and Cruze.
The main difference seems to be that the Cerato's boot is a bit shorter than the Corolla and Cruze resulting in 8.4% less boot space.

Vehicle dimensions
Cerato length : 4530 mm
Corolla length : 4545 mm (15mm longer)
Cruze length : 4597 mm (67mm longer)

Corolla width : 1760 mm
Cerato width : 1775 mm (15mm wider)
Cruze width : 1788 mm (28mm wider)

Cabin space
Corolla : 2605 liters
Cruze : 2690 liters (85 liters larger)
Cerato : 2741 liters (136 liters larger)

Boot capacity
Cerato : 415 liters
Corolla : 450 liters (35 liters larger)
Cruze : 450 liters (35 liters larger)

yip.

The Cerato is very spacious inside and I find the boot quite big.

Oh wow, I stand corrected then. I thought the Cerato was in the "booted Polo" segment.

Heh, I was about to disagree, before I saw Paul_S's post. In April I tested the Ford Focus (both 4-door and 5-door), the Livinia X-Gear, a few Toyota Corolla 1.6 Advanced models and even the Suzuki SX4. After a month of looking at various cars, I only needed one short drive in the Cerato to choose it over the rest. It has more features than both the Corolla and the Cruze, yet costs less. Please compare the price, power warranty and service plans of the Corolla and the Cruze before claiming either is a better choice.

I was happy enough with the Cerato's ride and spaciousness, only to discover the USB/Ipod MP3 radio/player, electronic *everything* (side mirrors, headlight adjustment, rearview mirror dimming), cup-holders galore, 6-speaker sound, steering-wheel audio controls and naturally the neat, sleek understated looks, which I love far more than the Corolla's dorky styling.

I super-pleased that Kia have taken very definite steps to attract buyers away from the traditional "big" brands like Ford, VW and Toyota. That crowd have monopolized our car prices for long enough
