Cost breakdown for 3G data (Cell-C vs Telkom Mobile/8ta)

In the wake of Telkom Mobile's *unt move with the prepaid data bundles, I'm happy to provide a simple breakdown of the cost and value of the Cell-C Giga and Telkom ****ty offerings.

Value goes further than just Gigabytes, network performance and customer experience is a major factor. There is a reason why you tend to pay more, mainly for the experience (with the exception of MTN)

Wow, that extra 150gb you get with the Giga200 for the same price as the Telkom 50 is massive.

Telkom is so frustrating sometimes. I really thought they got itand were hoing to come up with something great when they announced new packages.

I thought Telkoms strategy was to eventually replace copper with LTE. To do that they need to start offering packages closer to ADSL in terms of price and caps.

Do you want a slow network that always have connection problems or a fast network with no problems?

What does that have to do with anything?

LTE is supposed to be the technology that allows for wireless to replace copper.

If you look at the UK the operators are offering unlimited sim only deals for £20-£30 and population densities are much higher than here.

The South African providers are all hoping there are enough ignorant consumers like you so they can still overprice data like they did 10 years ago on the old inefficient 3g networks and limited international bandwidth.

Considering how expensive copper and fibre optic cable is to install and maintain they are hurting themselves and their customers with this strategy.

Well we are not in the UK now, are we?

And most of the ''ignorant'' customers like myself doesnt have a choice, due to area limitation, no copper or fiber around nor in the near future. And most of us ignorant customers do need a highspeed connection, and we have been so ignorant to do research about all the WISP'S around, but once again, not all of the ignorant customers lives in areas where there is a twackload of WISP'S to provide a service. And most propably most of the ignorant customers have dealt with poor service from cellc or mtn or maybe they dont have great reception, due to that they had to make the ignorant decision to go for telkom LTE. Thats got full coverage in their area. Pay a bit more to have good quallity signal and speed for their needs, bloody ignorant a-holes if you aks me!

I don't agree with your "Value" rating. To me, as it is extremely difficult to bring "satisfaction" into the equation, the "best value" is the lowest cost per GB.

I've been using the Telkom 60GB+60GB valid for 12 months deal at R1800. I use very little of the after hours data so this worked out at R30/GB. Considering that this was a promo deal the replacement 50GB data bundle valid for 12 months at R1799, which is R36/GB, is not bad at all. The only comparable CellC deal is the Giga100 bundle which works out to R25/GB. But that is only true if one uses the full 100GB within the 12 months. I only use about 60GB/year. This means I would be throwing away 40GB which raises the cost of the data I actually use to R41.65/GB.

If you do most of your downloading after hours then perhaps the CellC Giga200 is the best bundle for you but do the maths based on how much of the data you will actually use to see what you will be paying for data used.

Jeremiah Colman, the founder of Colman's Mustard, is reported to have said that he made his money from the mustard that was left on the side of the plate. The same is true of data suppliers. :-)

You're obviously not happy with Telkom's service but rest assured that CellC is no better.
 
Well, im getting telkom 100gig for R999 per month via selldirect. So thats R100 for 10gig. Thats pretty cheap for me

I am not sure why you seem to be fighting with me since I am on your side and for various reasons I too am unable to get ADSL so I feel your pain.

LTE is the justification Telkom uses for not installing copper for you. It was meant to be an ADSL equivalent at ADSL equivalent (Or thereabouts.) pricing and you could get it if they adopted that model without cynically treating it as typical 3G data to be priced accordingly.

The more one uses the less one should expect to pay per unit. After all, if you buy a 50kg sack of sugar you would surely expect to pay less per kilogram than if you only bought a 2,5kg packet.

If you use 100GB in a month then R10/GB is a very good price compared to the R36/GB I'll be paying on the 50GB valid for 12 months deal. The less you use though the more expensive it becomes per GB.
