One of the amusing things I have observed is that whilst the people in tech and science fields are usually politically left, psychologically they are highly conservative. You introduce a different way of doing things (like do code commenting differently) and there will be more kvetching than handing out bacon pie at a bar-mitzvah.

Economic conservatism is based more on ideology whereas cultural conservatism seems to be more psychological than ideological and may reflect a preference for simple, stable and familiar mores.[39] Some research indicates that within-person changes in levels of openness do not predict changes in conservatism.[40]

Well I don't think the modern day "far left" is very high in openness. They are only open to their preferred ideology not other cultures or ideas and they are authoritarian

Supports the idea that this is the same right wing authoritarians, but this time back with a guilty conscience. They still believe white people are superior. There's still constant cases of anti semitism.

The Trump Q-horn guy is more of an example of someone on the extreme end of openness.

personally, i don't place a lot of stock in these scales. firstly, there's a big methodology argument going on in the psychological community about the validity of just assigning factors and then going to look for them with badly constructed surveys, and secondly, i have an innate scepticism about whether blunt, self-reported categorisations mean anything. however, taking them on their own merits, they've been concluding for a long, long time that experiential openness and self-reported conservatism are at loggerheads.

Let's acknowledge that progress happened DESPITE the theist millstone and not BECAUSE of it.

Pretending religion was at the forefront of discovery and embraced progress without hesitation is an outright delusion.

I always say this whenever this comes up.

To paraphrase Sam harris - "most people who have plucked chickens in the past have plucked them while believing in christianity, but that does not mean christianity helped them to pluck a chicken ". Replace christianity with any religion and that still holds good.

I find it interesting because they were not in the crowd at Trump's speech where Trump called for a peaceful protest. Trump didn't incite them but they took advantage of the rally
