Cracked iPhones hit SA

Costs about the same as the iPhone

I dunno. I got it on contract. Was one of the nicest available back then about a year before the iPhone was released in the USA.

My next one will probably be one of the new iPAQs or an HTC.

you know... something is not going to "revolutionise the cellular industry".

Just a plain old smartphone that does about ten things more than the iPhone! :p

You will be assimilated.

hehe... I don't really have anything against the iPhone, I am sure it is a nice phone. What irks me is the attitude that this is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I would use one if it had 3G and Instant Messaging and I could use my Gmail and Skype on it. But I probably won't be rushing out to buy one. ;)

The last Apple product I ever worked on was a Macintosh v.1.0 in 1987.

You develop the attitude over time, whether u want to or not.
Gmail works great without 3G.
Don't know about Skype, but mobile data costs way to much to make it worthwhile.

I still think Apple should pay me to advertise for them! :p

I actually would not mind owning a nice Mac desktop computer. As long as I don't have to pay for it! :D Anyone wanna buy me one in order to "convert" me? :p

We'll talk in 3 years time when I upgrade my 24" iMac.
Tossed my Samsung D600 to the iPhone, so it is sliced bread to me.

Hmmm.... MTN claims that it is in talks with Apple regarding distribution rights.

I don't think that MTN alone can give Apple a BIGGER kickback than Vodaphone can! In 10 countries!

If you want the iphone it looks like you are going to have to go Vodacom, or you are going to have to buy an "un-ibricked-up" iphone! ;-)

(Posted from my iPhone) ;-)

I have seen some mention of Apple looking at different business models than the kick back one they have with AT&T, but expect the cost of the handset to increase if Apple have to loose the backhand.

I am also very keen to see how Vodacom explain to ICASA that the iPhone will be networked locked to Vodacom, which as I understand it is not allowed in SA.

I had a good laugh at this line:
"They have opened the iPhone up to third-party developers, so there are literally thousands of applications to download," says Andrew Wessels."

The 1000's of 3rd party apps you are referring to Mr. Wessels is mostly due to the hard work of the iPhone community and not thanks to Apple who only launched their restrictive SDK a few months ago. Besides any apps developed using the Apple SDK will only be available in the iTunes store, something we STILL don't have in SA.

Happy with my 2nd iPhone in South Africa

I now have my 2nd iPhone - a 16Gig one. I cracked both of them myself (with help from the iPhone community) at no cost. I am running the latest software & firmware of iTunes and the iPhone. It is easy if you know the link. My 1st phone costed me +-R3,300 & the 2nd one +-R4,800. I sold my 1st one for R4,250 second hand on bid or buy. One you have used it you will not want anything else. Yes without WiFi it is slower than 3G but long before Vodaom will have their legal phone I will have a new cracked the 3G version (due June / July) and sell my current one for R5,000-R6,000.

Long live the iPhone & long live Apple (especially since they are against Microsoft)!

:D:D:D

Dodgy...

Sorry, but if that is Apple's business model, I want nothing of it. Pay 10% of the revenue to them to provide it to customers...What a joke! I have accepted the devil that is Microsoft, but if Apple is going 666, I have 1 soul to sell, and have unfortunately done so to Bill, so there is nothing left for Steve.

Open platforms will make a phone so much cooler.

Actually if you think about it we already employ that model in SA. Your handset is subsidised by your subscription, if you want a fancier phone you pay in. All they are doing in the US is that the pay-in is much more and the subsidy is less.

Own iPhone

I prefer to buy my phone and go for the cheapest contract - mine is R29 for a weekender on MTN. Done it before i had my iphone (bought Nokia in Dubai) and now with my iPhone. Even when it is available later this year I will buy and crack the 3G version and continue with my El Cheapo copntract.

:D:D:D

Apple have always been just as bad as Microsoft. They just have a smaller market share.
