When the Mellys got back to their Gillitts home in the early hours of New Year’s Day, they found their German Shepherd, Tosh, had died in the garden and their other dog, Teeka, had gone.

Mike Melly said: “We returned just after one o’clock in the morning and found Tosh in the garden. We believe he died of a heart attack.”

Lisa Gadd, spokeswoman for the Kloof and Highway SPCA, described their kennels on Friday morning as “overflowing”.

She said one dog had to be “euthanased immediately” after a cracker had exploded in its mouth.

Melly said: “Some of our neighbours said the fireworks had sounded like a competition for the biggest bang. Why is there no policing of fireworks?”

“Teeka had disappeared. We spent hours searching for her. I went to the SPCA at about three in the morning and it was already full.

“We searched until about 4.30am. Only at about 8am did we find out a neighbour had taken her in.

“When I brought her home, she ran straight to the spot where Tosh had died. They were very close. Teeka is sitting next to me now and is clearly grieving.

Shame, the poor dogs. Animals shouldn't be left alone on New Years Eve.

Sorry, but no...

I used to sort of be on the fence in this regard... thinking we needed tighter regulation in terms of fireworks etc, but that pet owners must do their part. This year has completely galvanised my opinion, fireworks must be banned completely at all times of the year, fines for being caught with any type of firework should be a minimum of R10k, and the fine for letting off a firework should be around R20k. Pet owners have tried their best to do their part by and large and have been shown the middle finger by the childish little w@nkers who want to let off fireworks.

Dumb C*nts who are entertained by flashing lights and loud noises should grow up.

Sounds good in theory but in practice it's different because fines are not a deterrent for letting off firecrackers anymore than jail time for DUI. Education might be more successful.

The R10k and R12k fines that were dished out in parts of Durban on News Year will definitely make those people at least think again. and the more people who get fined, the more it will spread that fireworks are not acceptable (at least the ridiculous loud ones)

Let's hope so.

Controlled environments away from residential areas sure, but freak here by us it sounded like freaking world war 3. Our one dog who already has a problem with eczema on her face was so panicked she managed to scratch it open while we were trying to calm her down. A visit to the vet for antibiotics and a checkup hopefully she'll be okay.
Five years ago our staffie managed to climb a 6 foot gate and escaped our complex, if it hadn't been for a neighbour seeing him three kilometres away we'd not know where he was. His collar was hanging on the gate :(

I enjoyed fireworks when I was younger but now I dont really care to go and watch a fireworks show and would appreciate it if people refrain from setting them off due to having a baby and 2 dogs.

What I would like to know is do you guys also condem the fireworks displays in London, Sydney etc or is that fine?

How long are those shows? Are they in residential areas etc etc... what happens in this country atm seems to be hours of torture for wild animals and pets
