Cricket : India vs SA - 2008

Harris failed on a pitch perfect for spin bowling. WTF do you bowl defensively on a dustbowl as a spinner? He bowled only one good ball throughout the Indians 1st innings to Ganguly.
 
SA lost because they got no quality spinners. Plain and simple.

We always complain, that in the sub continent, they prepare pitches that favour the spinners etc. That is their right, if you can see a weakness in the opposition, of course you are going to exploit it. And it has been an obvious weakness for a long time.

Maybe we should start preparing the similar pitches at home, so that we can learn to manage the conditions better and maybe breed some more talented spinners.

he is as talented as jonty and i love him, think he is one of the most talented players we have in terms of new upcoming players

Yeah JP has to be in that team. They are being very unjust towards him. My point is that a player should be chosen on merit and not colour.

There is a distinct difference between preparing a spinning wicket and preparing a cabbage patch. If anyone has watched the game, they would know how shockingly bad that pitch was. I saw balls rolling through to the keeper. That is not acceptable for professional cricket, sorry.

Agreed. JP or Gibbs. Yeah, Gibbs has his problems, and he's not a direct replacement for Prince, but I'd still prefer his experience in the team.

We need to stop pretending that we have intl class spinners when we clearly don't. We need to work on developing our spinners domestically before exposing them to a team like India. FWIW, if we did decide we had to have a spinner, I'd go with Peterson. At least he can bat and recover some of the runs he'd give away. :)

True, but at least we can bat against spin much better than we used to. We're showing improvement, but we still don't have any intl class spinners.

The indians did just fine on that "Cabbage Patch". South Africa keep making excuses. In order to be the best you need to be able to play in any conditions.

Because they are used to that obviously. That pitch is nowhere near good enough for international cricket, no matter how anyone can try to justify it.
 
India prepare pitches that suit their style of play, SA prepare pitches that suit our style. What's the matter? We really need to be able to play on any pitch that we're faced with. Sure the pitch was pretty crap yesterday, but it didn't seem to bother the Indians nearly as much as it bothered us.

A crap wicket is a crap wicket whether its in India, Guyana, Birmingham or Perth.

The great teams adapt, SA make excuses.

So they are best in their default conditions, we are best in our default conditions, THATS WHY we arwe only SECOND BEST in the world. Just not good enough is it.
 
So you guys are going to conveniently look past the fact that balls were rolling through to the keeper? No freakin' way. Sorry, I agree to a degree with your comments, but not entirely. And again, let me repeat, the Indians live on these pitches and that's why they can handle them better. The rest of the world seems to prefer real pitches.

Same thing happened to Punter and his boys in 2004. As they say "Desperate times calls for desperate..." or whatever I can't remember.

Nope I would have complained about the pitch if we won. The fact that India bowled us out for next to nothing and then batted better than we did, remember they bat last and as such the pitch was even worse, made me conclude the pitch was fine, It is the South Africans than cannot bat under stressed conditions. They do not know how to adapt and play or rather bat as the Indians showed how it could be done on that same pitch in their second innings.
Bottom line is we are only good when the pitch is good and very bad when the pith is deteriorating. Also our bowlers are also very bad when the pitch is too flat, all they can do is do well when there is excessive bounce and some swing assistance from the pitch. On their own they are just fine, no better than the average in the world. Steyn do show promise tho.
 
i have to say using the pitch as an excuse is not on. as others have said, the indians are not used to seamer friendly conditions which is what we prepare when they come here. is that cheating?

test cricket has as one of its features differeing pitch conditions. if you want to be the best you must surely be able to face them all and conquer them. the indians acquitted themselves far better in the same conditions.

I remember the Indians saying that they wanted a "crumbled" pitch to be prepared for the last test match. I wonder what that says? Hmmm...
And for the last time...you guys are totally missing a certain point here - the Indians are used to that crap pitches and that's why they obviously batted better! However, I do agree that we need to learn to be able to bat on any pitch.
