Cricket: Test Cricket

Gone are the days of Alan Donald/Pat Symcox 200 run partnerships then...:p

Yup! Thinking of Symcox - maybe we should start taking this spiritualism stuff seriously - remember when the ball passed through his wicket! But then again, he got dropped after his century - must have been his star signs!

Well AB's spiritual enough for the entire team already. I don't think I've heard an interview with the guy that doesn't include ceiling cat. I think he even quoted a verse straight out of the holy book in his post match interview as well. His dominee must be so proud. I usually cringe because of his voice - but now it's like listening to PDV deliver a sermon...:D

Ah well - if he scores more centuries because of it then so be it...

Well done to SA. We now have the second highest successful 4th innings score in the record book.

Great performance from Smith and AB and useful contributions from Amla, Kallis and Duminy:).

Oh, and here's a great photo of Ponting:

:D :D :D

Edit: Does his pants have a groin tear? :p

Reading some of the articles on the match on Cricinfo, I am struck at how journalists can go quite overboard. Don't write that Oz team off. They're a bloody good team, and we have a monster mountain to climb to win another test down under. As long as they don't have that cheat Darrell Hair in as 3rd umpire we have a chance, but it is going to be difficult.

I'd leave Amla where he is. Especially during such a crucial series, one cannot mess around with the batting order too much. Besides, the Amla/Kallis combination has proven to be a lethal one on more than one occasion. I like the top half batting order - up to Boucher. It's a solid foundation, with experience and aggression where it is needed. It is the lower half that really bothers me. I would have loved to see the selectors take a chance in the series' leading up to this tour with Albie Morkel. He's a great all-rounder, but his temperament needs to shift if he expects to be selected for the test team, however he does need to be afforded the opportunity to prove that he has the ability to "stick around".

Albie isn't a good enough bowler for test cricket.

The current side balance is fine , the tailenders just need to work on their batting a bit.

The key is being able to take 20 wickets and this side has prove it can.

What a great result this was :) Just catching the highlights now.

How come Oz didn't put any kind of pressure on towards the end though? Like when there was like 30 needed and 6 wickets in hand, why did they not bring the field up and force us to go over the top? It was almost a stroll in the end :)

Because ponting is in fact a poor captain. Whenever he has truelly been tested as a captain he has failed. Failed in england in 2004, failed vs india this year and looks likely to fail at home against us. He had been riding the coattails of warne and mcgrath. Same applies to bret lee.

Their batting is still decent but have a good team you need a good bowling attack. This bowling is at best decent. If SA keeps working hard and stays focused we will win barring any miracles for aus.

This isn't the australia side of the past. There is no fat bloke who could win games for impossible positions anymore. There's no fast bowler who you couldn't hit of his lenght anymore. They could replace the waugh brothers but from I have seen in the last 12 months they don't look close to replace warne and mcgrath. Only bad umpiring stopped india from giving them a beating at home last year imho. They got thumped by india in india while we drew. The only sides they truelly imposed themselves against in the post warne and mcgrath era are the west indies and new zealand, hardly super powers in modern cricket terms.

I hadnt realized that this was the first game for Saffers to win since 1993 - 15 years or so without a win in OZ.

Whilst i knew that hadnt won any series, the lack of winning any test matches was a bit of a surprise.

BTW - if Saffers win 3 zip, i read they goto top of rankings.

* speechless *

Let me firstly say congrats. There is no one more happier than I, because as you have read (thanks fikus), I was disgusted with our performances in the test match, up until our 2nd innings. We screwed up after reaching 230/3. We should've made 400. Then in Australia's 2nd innings, we had them 167/7. We should have bowled them out for 180. But it was indeed 3rd time lucky for us.
Just one thing I'm worried about - we seem to take 1 - 0 and 2 - 0 series leads and then lose test matches, which seems to indicate a lack of focus/concentration. It's as if we just go out to win the first match and then don't maintain that intensity for the rest of the series. I hope this doesn't happen this time around.

It would have been different if Oz did not use their star cheating umpire Darrell Hair. ( Adelaide 1994 IIRC ).

...and in other news news, it looks like england might get their whites washed for them as the indians look ready to take them to the cleaners.:D

Wow its the second time Aus failed to defend a 400+ run chase....
I see a trend here...:p

warne, mcgrath, bevan, waugh bro's, gilchrist etc made a HUGE impact in aussie cricket. Its kinda like having a few rhodes and klusners in the team at the same time.. What made lee really good wasn't just his pace but mcgrath on the other end. I think for the aussies they becoming more normal, i.e. only 2 to 5 so big match winners in a team, instead of the past where 75-85% of the team pulverized their opponents.

In a way its good as games are becoming more competitive.. but india + sa seem like they having good batch of newer players with existing potentials that's are now experienced and paying off. I still think pakistan and sri lanka seem to have gone off the grid somewhat

I think Mackenzie has had enough chances to prove himself and he always fails, its time to kick him out!!:)

Australia make changes

Krejza out and Nathan Hauritz in;
Ben Hilfenhaus (uncapped) added to squad.

From cricinfo:
Hilfenhaus, a swing bowler from Tasmania, has played a one-day game and toured with the Australian team to India last year. After grabbing 60 first-class victims in 2006-07 he struggled last season with a back problem that also meant giving up his position on the tour of West Indies this year. His fitness and form has returned and he has 24 Sheffield Shield wickets at 18.66 this summer.

"Ben is in the middle of a successful Sheffield Shield season for Tasmania and has been added primarily because of his ability to swing the ball," Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said. "He also adds depth as a new ball bowling option."
