JOHANNESBURG: The inaugural season of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Professional Domestic Women's League has drawn to a thrilling close, marking a historic moment for women's cricket in the country.

The professionalisation of the Women’s League came on the heels of the immense success of the Proteas Women's team in recent ICC World Cups, highlighting the growing momentum and interest in women's cricket.

Recognising the need to further support and nurture talent at the domestic level, the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture (DSAC) invested R15 million over three years, laying the foundation for the professionalisation of the league and signalling a new era for women's cricket in SA.

In the first season of the professional league, the structure remains the same for the first two years, with a recurring annual automatic promotion and relegation system set to commence from the conclusion of the 2024/25 season onwards. This strategic approach aims to ensure fairness and competitiveness while providing opportunities for teams to progress and showcase their talents on a larger stage.

As the professional season concludes its maiden journey, it's also time to reflect on some remarkable statistics from the season.

Division 1 comprises of six esteemed teams, namely; Hollywoodbets Dolphins, DP World Lions, Fidelity Titans, Six Gun Grill Garden Route Badgers, World Sports Betting Western Province, and Recon Tactical Free Strate.

Hollywoodbets Dolphins emerged victorious in the CSA Women’s 1-Day Cup, securing the championship title under the guidance of former Proteas Women's cricketer Angelique Taai, who led her team with exemplary coaching skills and strategic acumen.

In the CSA Women’s T20 Challenge, World Sports Betting Western Province clinched the championship title, with former Proteas Women's cricketer Claire Terblanche steering her team to success with her astute leadership and coaching prowess.

Meanwhile, the DP World Lions finished as runners-up in both competitions, showcasing their resilience and competitiveness throughout the season.

The league's Division 2, consisting of 10 teams divided into two pools of five, has provided a platform for emerging talent to showcase their skills and compete at a high level.

The Coastal Pool features Northern Cape, Eastern Province, Boland, Border, and Kei, while the Inland Pool is comprised of Easterns, Limpopo, North West Dragons, KwaZulu-Natal Inland, and Mpumalanga.

In individual performance highlights from the CSA Women’s 1-Day Cup, Tazmin Brits emerged as the top run-scorer with a remarkable tally of 464 runs in seven matches, showcasing her batting prowess and consistency on the field.

Following closely behind is former Proteas teammate Mignon van der Merwe, who amassed 422 runs in six matches, demonstrating her skill and experience in the format.

In the CSA Women’s T20 Challenge, Brits once again showcased her batting brilliance, leading the run charts with 349 runs in seven matches, followed closely by Faye Tunnicliffe with 341 runs in eight matches.

Notably, Western Province’s Nosipho Vezi and Titan’s Paulinah Mashishi led the wicket-takers log in Division 1’s CSA T20 Challenge, demonstrating their bowling prowess and contributing significantly to their teams' performances.

In the bowling department, Division 2 players shone brightly, with Liyema Jubati from Border leading the charts with an impressive haul of 26 wickets, followed closely by Eastern Province's Jana Nell with 25 wickets. Their exceptional performances underscore the depth of talent within Division 2 and highlight the potential for players to make a significant impact on the league's future seasons.

CSA Director of Cricket, Enoch Nkwe, commented;

“The CSA Women’s League has not only elevated the standard of women's cricket but has also paved the way for the continued growth and development of the sport in SA.

“This structure has fostered intense competition and provided valuable opportunities for players to develop their game. With a clear pathway for teams to progress between divisions, the league is poised to become a breeding ground for future cricket stars and a source of inspiration for aspiring players across the nation.

“With plans already underway for the next season, CSA remains committed to building on the momentum generated by the first season and further elevating the status of women's cricket. As we bid farewell to the inaugural season, we look forward to witnessing the continued growth and success of the Professional Domestic Women’s League in the years to come,” Nkwe concluded.​
 

Kathryn Bryce's all-round show helps Scotland Women qualify for maiden T20 World Cup​


Scotland 112 for 2 (McColl 50, Bryce 35*, Kelly 2-28) beat Ireland 110 for 9 (Paul 45, Bryce 4-8, Slater 3-32) by eight wickets

An all-round show by captain Kathryn Bryce helped Scotland Women make history as they qualified for their maiden T20 World Cup, beating Ireland in the first semi-final of the qualifiers on Sunday. Bryce first bagged 4 for 8 with the ball and followed that up with 35* with the bat, as Scotland restricted Ireland to 110, and chased the target down with 22 balls to spare.

The win helped Scotland book one of the two remaining slots for the World Cup proper in Bangladesh in October.

Ireland won the toss and batted first in Abu Dhabi, but the day belonged to Bryce. The right-arm medium-pacer struck twice in the first over of the day, removing both of Ireland's openers for ducks. Ireland never recovered from those early blows, as they were then reduced to 25 for 5 at the start of the seventh over. By then, Bryce had already completed her four-wicket haul.

CSA BIDS FAREWELL TO LONG-SERVING PROTEAS WOMEN HEAD COACH HILTON MOREENG

JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) has today announced the departure of Hilton Moreeng as the Proteas Women head coach upon the conclusion of his contract at the end of the 2023/24 season.

During his more than 11-year tenure, Moreeng expertly oversaw the evolution of the South African women’s national team into a fledgeling professional set-up, taking charge of 279 matches across all three formats.

Under his guidance, the Proteas Women achieved significant success, winning 84 out of 149 One-Day International (ODI) matches, with a win ratio of 56%. In T20 Internationals (T20Is), the team secured 60 victories out of 127 encounters, with one draw and two losses in Test cricket.

At global ICC events, the 46-year-old guided South Africa to the brink of glory as he became the first national coach to reach a senior World Cup final during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 held on home soil. That achievement was preceded by two semi-final appearances in 2014 and 2020.

In 50-over World Cups, Moreeng’s charges featured in two semi-final matches at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2017 and 2022, losing out to England on both occasions.

Assistant coach Dillon du Preez will take over the reins in the interim before a new head coach is appointed.

In a statement to the cricket fraternity and the South African public, Moreeng commented:

“I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to CSA and management for entrusting me with the incredible opportunity to coach the Proteas Women national team. It has been an honour and a privilege to lead such a talented group of athletes over the years.

Coaching at the international level has been an extraordinary journey filled with countless memorable moments and achievements. These experiences will forever hold a special place in my heart.

I want to express my sincere appreciation to all the players and team management who have been instrumental in this journey. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside each of you. I would also like to thank the South African fans and the media for their unwavering support throughout this journey. Your encouragement has been a constant source of motivation.

Last but certainly not least, I am deeply grateful to my family and friends who have stood by me through the highs and lows along the way. Your love and support have been my rock.

As I step away from this role, I want to wish the team and everyone involved the very best of luck in the future. I have no doubt that the future holds great success and prosperity for all,” he concluded.

In other changes to the Proteas Women coaching set-up, physiotherapist Molebatsi Theletsane will also depart from his position, with Neline Hoffman Kellerman joining the squad. Additionally, Dafabet Warriors assistant coach Baakier Abrahams has been officially appointed as the batting coach, while DP World Lions’ Bongani Ndaba assumes the role of fielding coach. Both Abrahams and Ndaba had a brief stint consulting with the team during the recent Sri Lanka tour.

Long-serving South Africa Women head coach Hilton Moreeng's tenure has ended after a period of 11 years and four months.

Moreeng was originally appointed in the role in December 2012, and oversaw South Africa's transition to professionalism in 2014 and their greatest successes in the decade since. He took them to two ODI World Cup semi-finals, two T20 World Cup semi-finals, and was in charge when they became the first national senior side to reach a World Cup final, at home in the 2023 T20 World Cup. He was South Africa's first black African national Coach.

Dillon du Preez, Moreeng's assistant since September 2020 and a former first-class cricketer, will take over from him in an interim capacity for South Africa's tour of India in June-July with a permanent coach to be appointed after that.
