Cricket world cup discussion thread

Anyway back to our match :) I'm not sure where everyone is getting the idea that Botha is bowling economically, even though he isn't taking wickets. His economy rate is worse than Peterson and Tahir, and of course his average is much worse than both.

Loose Botha and bring in Tsotsobe.

Drop Morkel, he can't field or bat.
Tsotsobe can take more wickets and will compliment Steyn better on that slow track.

Agree with you for once... :erm:

would like to see how he stacks up against morne morkel in the world cup so far. Bear in mind he is a pretty good fielder and can bat a bit too. His knock against india went a long way to getting us home. If we were playing anywhere else I might agree that he should be benched but in sub continent spin is king and it doesn't even have to be quality spin. The quicks with the exception of a few have gone for plenty. Oz's battery of world class fast bowlers were not particularly imposing tonight despite bowling for their spot in the world cup.... Just saying....

We will never now but I get the since lopsy would have been in the top 5 wicket takers so far in this wc had he been selected consistently. He varies his pace nicely and gets the ball just to drift away from the batsman getting them out as they tend to follow the ball playing away from the body cause he also gets the ball to straighten on a length. He's not quick enough to generate nice pace for the batsman on a flat track but gets enough bounce to keep them playing on the backfoot. He's just awkward. I would love to see him get a start against new Zealand but if we don't go all out spin it will be morne and Dale again.

It's interesting how it seemed botha was nailed on to be the next odi captain and now he may not even be able to command a place in the squad

Team dynamics have shifted remarkably with the form Peterson has shown and tahir being available, included and performing. Now all of a sudden the obsession and need to have any old spinner in the team has changed to which of our 3 world class spinners are we going to select. We have a similar dilemma with our fast bowlers. 3 that would competently represent the country in the world cup final if they required to. Pity we can only field 11 players. Pity the super sub concept wasn't endorsed. Pity the world cup isn't contested with 1st and 2nd teams.

It leads me to believe Alma or AB will get the the gig

Focus on Proteas guys and forget the Aussies. They had three great WCs and three in a row aint bad, but they didn't have the team this year. As I said in other thread, they didn't choke, they were outplayed by a better team and not Ponting, Lee et al's fault that they only had knives at a gun fight.

Let's focus on how the 'better team' (Proteas) go against a weaker team today.

As for TV coverage, again hatred of everything that 'isn't as it were'...you have coverage on pay TV or do what I do and watch it online.

Here in Aus only the Aussie games were shown on free TV (not ABC even) and then last night only the Indian innings after regular prime time programming. So why are you bashing SABC like that. You bash them for not making money but then you want them to show something that very few people are interested in.

Geez you blokes complain alot. Perhaps you should migrate;)...or maybe you have already tried and that's why you hate Aussies:D

Yes you are right, but I think the SABC thing is because of how they advertised it. I got the impression they were going to all the games initially, with that all the action talk. But cricket is really growing in South Africa, so I don't think it is a case of very few people being interested in it any more.

The team sheet according to some of the aforementioned posts should be:

Amla
Smith (c)
Van Wyk (wk)
Kallis
AB
JP
Faf
Botha/Tahir*
Peterson
Steyn
Tsotsobe

I think the inclusion of Lopsy gives variation and agree with sandmanm34 that he's awkward and gets tends to get early wickets. The boy has passion.

So if Kallis is on form (and so far in this WC he's been improving), then we have the option of 30 overs from the seam, left and quick bowling department.

From the spin and slow bowling department we could look for 40 overs. The question, for me, is whether we play Tahir or Botha. Botha definitely adds a little more depth to the batting, and he's good for 20 in double time. Tahir is far more attacking. He's also more economical than Botha.

Morne Van Wyk is my line up. I wouldn't risk AB breaking down again. And so long as Morne stays away from the sleeping tablets, he's a great contributor.

I still think that the selectors missed the plot with not including Albie... especially with his unbeaten 108 against Cobras.
I am just not sure where he could slot in. If AB was fit to keep, then I would've dropped Van Wyk for Albie.

WILL THE GAME START ALREADY!!!

Probably been answered, but I couldn't find it. What do the seemingly random numbers on the Protea caps mean? I also have seen numbers on the Pom's shirts.

it's the players choice. They can choose numbers they want.

I know Steyn Choose 8 because of Frank Lampard. He's a massive Chelsea supporter.

I predict the following team:
Smith
Amla
Kallis
AB
JP
Faf
Van Wyk ( might bat at 3)
Peterson
Steyn
Morkel
Tahir
I don't think playing the 3 spinners is going to help. I rather have an extra batsman. with 3 spinners our tail starts at 7. that would be a long tail
