Cricket world cup discussion thread

Rubbish it is the most balanced side we have ever had i think, if anything we have too many options.

Good spin
good pace
Good fielding
Awesome batting line up

choking mentality very strong.

I might agree with you except for the inexperience of the team and the fact that it wasn't a settled team that had played a lot of cricket together.

With all due respect, Taufel and Dar must be the first two umpires (unless one or BOTH their teams are in the final. :P)

no arguments from me ... I am a fan of Dar and Taufel, but since I am a Saffer, I must be patriotic :)

Tahir 14 wickets @ 10.71 with an economy rate of 3.79 per over.
Robbie Peterson 15 wickets @ 15.86 with an economy rate of 4.25
Dale Steyn 12 wickets @ 16 with an economy rate of 4.15
M.Morkel 9 wickets @ 23 with an economy rate of 5.13
Johan Botha 4 wickets @ 42.75 with an economy rate of 4.07.
Kallis 5 wickets @24.60 with an economy rate of 4.10.

Botha might be on the economical side, but he doesn't seem to get wickets.

Interesting batting stats too. Not consistent enough. And if the top order failed, it seems, so did the rest.

We choked. No point in harping on it. It doesn't do any good.

Time to look forward to the finals, the IPL, the new coach and captain (please, not Botha :().

On the upside, Bafana did us proud on Saturday against the Pharaohs :D

The doctor recommended anti-depressants.Its clearly not working.

48hrs later and the anger and frustration knows no bounds.

The post mortem being done is not going to change much.
Blame game will be hurled at all concerned.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing...if's and buts.

How does one move on as a patriotic supporter ?

The sense of anticipation will now build up for the next four years. The media will cast the new actors as world champions elect yet again and disappointment will likely prevail once more.

Bitter and angry because NZ should not have won. Had the boys got beaten whilst giving their best will have been kinder, not showing up when it mattered most , that is what pi$$es of most supporters.

A bit delayed but some points that i have mentioned:
Lets start from the beginning
1. Team Selection for WC, as in 2003, we took too many top order batsmen (5 Top order fighting for top 3 spots and 3 middle order for spots 4-7). In 2003 when Rhodes was injured we brought in Smith (GK, HG, JK, BD & GS as our first 5 - thats not balance). We also took inexpereinced players - although faf did well).
2. Team balance - for majority of WC we players 4 specialist bowlers and had faf, JP and Kallis as fifth. This allowed a 7th batsmen (look at the difference Raina made for India coming at 7). Why changed this now (only against Bangladesh we player 6 batsmen).
3. Smith - gone from the precitable to upredictable. Batting was awful. He was also batting slowly, i wonder what was amla's and his role in the team, cos it seemed that Amla was in a hurry. Smiths bowling changes did not make sense. When a bowler was on top - let him damn bowl for longer.
4. Kallis - statistically brilliant and now fav. son on SA cricket - i am a fan of this guy - but he will never be a legend in my view - cos to be the best he needed to lead from the front and never has.
5. Luck - what would have happened if Amla did not get out in such unfortunate circumstances (i have always maintainted that for us to win the Wc we need Amla and AB to fire).
6. We probably would have choked anyway. Only Klusener had the BMT, maybe Kemp and A. Morkel as well (and he was available).

Amla for Captain.

Okay, I have had the whole weekend to recover. No more excuses, we choked really badly.

Now I have a few questions about the selections.
Why did we choose Morkel in the game against NZ, when his hole style of bowling was negated by the pitch. There was no bounce in that pitch, wouldn't it have been better to Lonwabo in?
Smith hasn't been playing well for almost two years now, shouldn't something be done about this, move him down the order or drop him? I mean Amla was dropped and look at how he returned.
Our team is almost completely reliant on Amla, Kallis and AB to score, with JP adding some runs (and making some really stupid decisions sometimes). Do we really have no better players to fill the holes? We basically know Smith is going to fail, JP is going to fail if the goal is to high.

I don't know, but this really was our best shot and our own players make stupid decisions. Really how can you take a risky 2 to be run-out when the runrate is still 4? We are probably the best accumulating team with singles and we make bad decisions like that. There was no boundries needed. Just play it out.

Told you so??
The evidence was there...
I did say it, sure someone else also mentioned it...
to bad to sad.

Another trend in the wrong direction, the coach is still in denial, WTF?!

Stupid team.

Only weak and unorganised teams include alot of all rounders.
You specialist individuals in a team.

All the great cricketing nations have and use specialist players.
Do you honestly think the Proteas should play average all rounders?

What a joke! LOL

I wouldnt call them specialist bowlers...
Steyn is good, but I think they coaching him to be economical rather than attacking, thats my view of watching him play recently...
Morkel Im not a fan of, not one bit... highly overated for his place in the side, he WILL be exposed in the sub continent.
Tsotsobe... doing well at the moment. Hopefully he is capable of doing the same in the WC, I think Smithers needs to keep him motivated, if Smithers loses faith in Tsotsobe, its over for him.
Botha is okay, Parnell needs to wake up, hes a quality bowler but has no direction, literally. He needs coaching!!!

The Proteas are lacking 2 good bowlers.
Ive watch England play and their 2 opening bowlers are lethal! Anderson and Tremlett compliment eachother. The Paki bowlers as well, Gul destroyed NZ tail yesterday.
I think the Proteas need to start coaching players to bowl like the likes of Waqar, Gul, Wasim etc. This line and length BS is a waste.

but apart from all the bowlers, the batsmen need to stand up as well, they cannot rely on the tail enders to knock a 40 - 50 if need be. India doesnt have a long tail, Harbajan and Khan are not batsmen, they sloggers. Theres a difference.

Well said dude... and you saw all this a month ago? Wow...

Just thinking about teams that have won the WC before. The Aussies and SL in particular.

I dont seem to remember any youngsters making any impression.

Its sounds like a good policy to blend youthful talent with experience, but surely by looking at current WC and previous stats.... top of both bowling and batting is almost certain to come from the older, experienced players.

Albie, Kemp and Boucher would not have chocked.... alot less.

The signs of out middle order failings where there since the Indian home series. Cant really fault our bowling attack, they tried, the batsmen did not come to the party.

ODI cricket can be a lottery at times, 'tis best not to have high expectations for the Proteas, it would serve them better. Rather have them play kak cricket and still perform at major tournaments, than raise the hopes of a nation and then fail miserably everytime.

and for the record.... Albie just scored another 100 and opened the bowling taking wickets again over the weekend.

Do you guys think Corrie was being a bit sarcastic when he said something along the lines of 'the NATION should help us build for next WC.'Either he meant -be gentle with me people of SA because its my first time-or SA put the mockers on us for constantly critisizing and calling us chokers,so SA needs to deal with this.

And yet another YEAR South Africa Chokes in the Quarter Finals LOL..
Shame that shouldn't eat Butterpeanut and Brown bread before a game
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I wonder why protea supporters laugh and shout chokers.
A true supporter will be angry and depressed at the same time.

They aren't, IMO. I still want to cry just thinking about it. Although, I'm not angry, funny enough. I just want the Proteas to accept that there has to be something wrong and work towards a solution. Not like the line of crud that the coach tried to feed about the there being nothing wrong and not changing anything. Would someone send the twit a wake up call, Hallo, how many WC's have you guys played? How many Finals? There is definitely something wrong.

Although there is nothing wrong with calling a spade a spade. The team choked. Don't laugh about it, but like the good doctor says "You can't change what you don't acknowledge".

Gads! It really, really sticks in my craw that we lost to New Zealand (of all the teams in world dammit!)

Yeah. And there are two things that really cheesed me off about it too - firstly the fact that it wasn't a fight at all. We were in the driver's seat and then we went and did the dreaded 'c' word again. When Duminy played that shot of his I swore out loud. After that it didn't take long to realise history was repeating itself. Then, I was under the impression that the Kiwis were a reasonably sportsmanlike side but seriously, what a bunch of ****ers. I thought the aussies were bad in that way but they're on par I reckon. The Faf/Mills/Vettori/Styris/Taylor incident REALLY got my blood going. I soooo badly wanted us to mop them up after that by like Pommie said, as soon as AB was gone (and they'd had their little go at Faf), the NZ side really believed they had the game in the bag - and they did. Then 5 minutes later that Kiwi commentator with a new found confidence in his team was harping on about how the Kiwis were only ever concerned about 2 sides in the knockout stage - SA not being one of 'em. I wanted to strangle him. Wasn't that confident at the start of the game, was he?

Anyway, hope Sri Lanka tear them a new one and then take the final as well.
