Crime in SA is not that big a problem

That's what I usually tell visitors. But they don't listen, or forget. Then sh|t happens !

This place is deceptive because on the surface, especially during daytime, it looks OK. But it's not OK.

This actually makes it more dangerous than other countries where the danger is more on the surface, because there you know that you have to be careful, and you don't forget it.
 
We have a ruling party that would rather waste money on a stupid song than apply it on crime. WE have:

According to a presentation submitted to the Parliamentary portfolio committee for police, the money was spent as follows:

- R498m was spent during the 2006-'07 financial year to build seven new police stations and improve three others;

- R727m was spent during the 2007-'08 financial year to build one police station and improve three;

- R939m was spent during the 2008-'09 financial year to build one police station and improve five; and

- R1.1bn was spent during the 2009-'10 financial year to build two police stations and improve one.

*** man. It is ok ! I go where I please and do what I want. Stop projecting boogie men in every closet. The places to avoid are extremely obvious. And if you avoid them, as tourists do, you will find as the record proves, this is a extremely safe country to travel in. But yes, like anywhere be careful. I was hijacked before while on holiday out of South Africa because I didn't follow common sense.

WTF! He must leave his job, his family and friends and just move to the coast. You remind me of "Rooster", he was always telling people to move to "so called safer" areas too.

Do you realize that you have contradicted yourself in ONE sentence. It takes a certain kind of intelligence to achieve that.

Sophisticated infrastructure? Go on pull the other one. Rampant e-coli in the drinking water, potholes all over the place, an electricity infrastructure that is, at best, wheezing along, public health in shambles, a police force actively committing violent crime etc. Dunno what you're smoking but I want some.

This is true. More to the point I do actually live in a coastal town which is full of crime regardless.

I just find the majority of people who talk about "Not a day goes by" or "I know x amount of people who have been hijacked" etc all seem to come from JHB. I also have friends who were so unhappy in JHb they wanted to emigrate. By my suggestion they didn't and are loving it here at the coast.

South African murders per 100 000 in the last few years. In order : 50 48 48 43 40 40 41 39 37 37

With that in mind is it correct to say "spiraling out of control ?" when it's consistently reducing ?

Well, in some respects you are right - you are more likely to get hijacked in your own driveway than anywhere else !

And when everybody has moved to the " safer areas " the criminals will stay where there are nothing to steal rape murder or plunder. Yes Briliant plan.
 
In order to ascertain this we need to get reputable statistics not the one the SAPS releases from time to time. I think the media overplays it a bit but there is a crime problem in this country hang out at any criminal court for a day and see the high court rolls.

That does not give an accurate picture, very few crimes get to court, and even fewer have convictions.
 
He should go tell that to the woman who's baby was raped. Would be a good show off.

Every year the opposition parties unravel all the "tweaking" done to stats by police commisioners to make it seem as if they are "reaching their targets" - Don't take that figures to heart...

To illustrate how much lower we probably are than 9 notice how many countries are missing or haven't reported stats for many years, or report ridiculous stats that don't match anecdotal evidence. Countries like Somalia don't even have functioning governments or police forces. I would suggest we would probably still be in the top fifty for murder if all countries had the ability to report stats. So it's nothing to be proud of. But we're hardly the "murder capital of the world" as some drama queens like to go on about.

But yes, I think in essence it's silly to say crime here is nominal. We clearly have a very high level of murder. I wouldn't deny this. But I would reject anyone middle classed person seeing themselves chiefly as the victims. The gross majority of murders are drunken disputes turned ugly. Not "hijackings" and "house breakings" and the true "terror" crimes. They make up around 500 of the 18000 murders according to police.

Crime that cannot be reported or reacted to is no problem.
