Crime Stats

Pretoria...eish.....wakker loop boet

Pretoria ranks among the most dangerous places in the country when it comes to violent robberies, with three of the capital's suburbs falling within the top 11 most dangerous and violent areas to live in.
This was revealed during the release of the South African Police Service (SAPS) annual crime statistics at the Union Buildings in the capital yesterday. The statistics relate to the period from April 1 2005 to March 31 this year.
While Pretoria and its policing areas were not on the country's top 10 list when it came to murders, rapes and indecent assaults, the capital does not fare well when it comes to robbery with aggravated circumstances.

In my road, someone was recently hijacked and they took his car. My mom phoned later that day to request some panic buttons from ADT, and the guy said he will phone back because there was another hijacking in progress!

I live in Centurion, and over the past five years, there has been only two break-ins into cars in our complex, one about three years ago, and the other early last year. not bad for a country rampant with crime

Is it your supposition that due to the anecdotal evidence you have given that the crime problem in South Africa is over stated?

Business sounds alarm over crime

Stubbornly high crime statistics show South Africa has a long way to go to fight one of the prime deterrents to much-needed investment, business leaders said on Thursday.

The latest crime data, released by the police on Wednesday, showed a slight decline in murders and other crimes but an alarming rise in others, such as armoured-car heists.

The contrasting figures pose a tough challenge for authorities as they try to lure tourists and foreign investors, especially ahead of the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa.

"I have a real feeling that the growth in criminal activity will keep rising," said Siphiwe Nzimande, CEO of Business Against Crime, a privately funded group based in Johannesburg.

"If that continued to be the pattern over some years it means South Africa [would] become a less safe place to do business. We need to fix it."

At last a good Judge with insight

Ngoepe: Poverty is no excuse

Judge Hattingh said the accused deserved the harshest sentences possible. He said the men had killed a young girl who could not defend herself.

They also had raped an old woman, causing her trauma and embarrassment. She also had to deal with the trauma of her employers (the Matlala family).

He said the concept of a life sentence was misleading to the public as prisoners were eligible for parole after spending 25 years in prison, depending on their behaviour.

Crime statistics 'crazy'

He called on the government to institute democratic processes to determine the reinstatement of the death penalty.

Judge Hattingh said that, in his opinion, the crime statistics released this week were "crazy" because nothing had changed.

The court would advise the department of correctional services not to release the Molefe and Ndlovu before they were 60 years old.

Judge wants death-penalty poll

"Democracy is to hear what the people say. A referendum regarding the death penalty must be held now," says Judge Gerhardus Hattingh.
"All right-thinking South Africans, brown, black or white, want the death penalty to be re-introduced,"

These guys stuck it out in this country and got... What?

Please Mr Jstrike comment on this!

Nqakula's rosy future 'a farce'

Visagie, a senior SABC sports manager, his wife and their 20-year-old daughter were packaging dried boerewors and biltong in their garage when they were attacked by four armed men.

Magda said: "After they shot Joe, he was bleeding from his stomach, but ran to the safe to get his firearm.
........................................................................................................
She said this was their third burglary.

"The first time, there were people in our house while we were sleeping and, two years ago, a burglar was wounded in the house."

Now what... Be proud? as there is nothing wrong here!

Picking cherries

Elsewhere (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost.php?p=660395&postcount=4) you said:
"the complex I live in ( a large complex about 100 units ) is patrolled every night by officers from the local police station - they are not told to do this, ( I know this as they often stop off for a coffee and a smoke at my place )"

Do you think that most complexes in South Africa are patrolled by police officers every night? Further, do you think that your police-patrolled complex is representative of how most South Africans live, in general?

Sounds like you're cherry-picking examples to push an agenda.

R1m in equipment stolen at Centurion mall

Armed gangs stormed three shops in a Centurion mall in the space of six hours, robbing them of cellphones and electronic equipment worth almost R1-million.

The first group of gunmen hit an electronics shop late on Wednesday night, holding a man hostage while they cleaned out the store.

And at about 5am on Tuesday morning a second gang used a sledgehammer to smash down the glass doors of two cellphone shops. A shoot-out between the gunmen and a security guard before they fled.

'The men had expensive tastes - they took all the top-of-the-range models'
This is not the first time the Reds Mall in Wierdapark has been the target of "professional" and "arrogant" gunmen, store managers said.

In the past three years, Ackermans, Clicks, Glomail, American Express and more recently the Mr Price clothing store have been targeted.

Centurion
Pretoria - "Minister (Charles) Nqakula's words are farcical and I think it is high time for the people to claim their rights and demand action.
"All those nice-sounding words of his in the newspaper do not mean a thing," says Magda Visagie of Centurion after husband Joe, 52, was shot in the stomach in a robbery at their home on Wednesday evening.

Deon Steyn, 20, Marcus Malete, 24, Dirk Kleinhans, 28, and Hennie Botha, 22, were on their way to Lephalale on Friday morning to deliver cash to a local bank.

The robbers forced the money van off the road with a Mercedes, which they'd hijacked earlier in the day.

The heist gang immediately opened fire on the van, which had overturned.

Flammable liquid

Otto says the robbers threw a flammable liquid over both the cash van and the Merc and set them alight, before hijacking another vehicle in which to make their getaway.

That vehicle was found abandoned about 2km from the scene of the attack.

A motorist who happened to come across the burning security vehicle managed to pull one of the guards from the flames.

The man, who was still alive when he was pulled from the inferno, died later.

Initially police thought the robbers had got away with the money, but by Friday afternoon it had became clear that the cash boxes had not been taken, Otto said.

"Don't worry" says the minister
"Crime is going down" says the minister

I say put the minister in a stranded car on the N1 without police nearby or his bodyguards. If nothing happens put him in a fedility guards van as the "Cash in transit"

I wonder if he would feel all safe and cosy then in knowing (Some)crime goes down

The problem with Stats is they can be manipulated.
We know first hand with Telkom as this is one of their most favourite tactics to skew the truth from Joe Public.

AFAIK The Police may only release a percentage as opposed to the actual figure which then is compared to a similar period from the previous year/s.
One would think they would release a year on year figure, but recently at the CPF (Community Police Forum) I noticed they used a 4 or 6 month comparison and not a full year.
This may not give any light on the total crime statistics as people understand a yearly figure as opposed to a quarterly or 6 monthly figure.
Also most crimes IMO are committed in winter, especially burglaries when the air is cold and the public are sleeping. Normally those nights when it is cold and a bit windy as the two combined almost screen the burglars as they try to gain access to a target property.

Another thing.
If The Police say that a crime like Rape is down 10% what does this actually mean?
IMO it means there were about 10% less "reported" Rapes in the year under review, but it fails to give the actual figure which may run into hundreds of thousands.
Recently I heard that only one in ten Rapes are reported?
I cannot remember the source now, but it would make one wonder as to the real problem in this country as Rape is comparative to assault as they are based on the same principle of violence. And disrespect for woman?

We live in a weird society and as Tibby mentioned in another thread there are serious social problems that may or may not have stemmed from before 1994?
Where does one draw the line?
When is the crime a reason of circumstance and when is the crime just malicious. At some stage in our History the people that live in this fine country must move forward and take responsibility for themselves.
People must understand that Rape, Murder, Robbery is not normal and should not be tolerated.

If we let our guard down now we may never regain Law and Order.
Although in some circumstances I think the line has been crossed already.
For instance the Authorities have lost control of the influx of illegal immigrants and a great proportion of our crime stems from these people?
I believe that the Robberies are committed by well organised gangs of foreigners with local assistance. These Robbers are living a fantasy life of stealing to survive as they have no notion of actually doing a days work.
Their sole modus operandi is to steal cash and whoever stands in their way may get taken out. They operate with high powered weapons like Ak47's which can penetrate a Policeman's Kevlar. Policeman are now also a statistic and I notice the Minister failed to mention how many Policeman were killed in the line of duty.

I am not sure if anyone has been to Futurex this week at the CTITC.
A sign of the times as to the Security Equipment on show.

Alas i have to agree...:(

Tell me one thing... if someone is breaking in/stealing , who do you call ? .. I call ADT or the Community presinct I subscribe to. I dont think its EVER reported to the police. I think the police get involved only when someone is caught - NOT on incident.

So... the police stats are as usefull as Anti-Burn matches

Same here.

When my power-tools were stolen in August out of my Tool Shed I phoned ADT.
They stepped up patrols and all their staff were notified of the situation. The ADT Area Commander came to the property personally to survey the scene.
I did not call The Police, although one came into my business at a later date and I mentioned it to him and his prompt reply was to check Cash Convertors.
Not very helpful, but what else can they say?
Even if one found your items at Cash Smokkelaars, they are hardly going to just hand it over anyway.
You would need to contact The Police and they need to investigate. I am not sure?

As a SAPS member I am appalled that you don't at least report it. As a citizen I completely understand - and agree, private security is more efficient for this.

A little off topic. Last night I was on duty, and 90% of the calls we had were car accidents and the rest was burglaries. All the burglaries (mostly businesses - they're targeting shops in mini malls lately :( ) we went to, the security companies were already on the scene and doing their thing (which technnically is supposed to be our thing).

Imagine the crime stats if EVERYONE reported EVERYTHING? The reason people don't is because the police develop an attitude when 'petty crime' is reported and it automatically gets screened out anyway. I had this experience in Joburg once after I was robbed one day and then mugged the next. The cops said they were on their way to a murder and two rapes so "do you really want to report this"? I've never gone back!
