CrossFit

True. You want to have a clear space around you when lifting, especially a lift like that. Not plates or some idiot nochalantly walking nearby you as you lift.

On a related note, I don't know if you saw the latest debacle at the OC Throwdown involving hurdles and people falling on their backs when failing the jumps...

Weights and things lying around pose a big risk, as shown here. Imagine this happens to you. I don't know about you, but for me, my life would be over. Imagine looking at this video, and looking at it repeatedly, telling yourself if only those weights were not stacked there. Something so small. It's not like Imagine if I studied harder, this is permanent disability :( :(

Yeah I hear you, getting injured like that is one massive thing to get over. I certainly beat myself up for far less permanent (and minor in comparison) stuff ups!!

Would not wish such an injury on any half decent human being.

I am sitting with shoulder tendinitis, and it's been holding me back from certain activities in the gym to the point of me getting angry and going home when I try something and it's still sore. After seeing what happened to this guy, my shoulder is suddenly not really such a problem anymore  :o

Last Saturday I went to gym with someone I know who I regard as really still quite new to free weights. I am trying to teach him how important form is, but I'm not a coach and the fact that he is about 22cm taller than me makes what feels right for me quite different for him. Deadlifts as an example. He kept knocking his knees, a problem I don't have as I am so much closer to the ground and bar :D

Anyways, his eyes are bigger than his muscles :p Another example, say overheard press. He will warm up with my warmup weight, then do 10 reps with my working weight. Then add on like 10kg and then struggle and then drop the weight back down to something more manageable :p Huge potential for strength gains as he is about 6 foot 4 at least, but he needs to learn to walk before he can run! Else that potential is more likely to result in injury as he really doesn't realise how little he knows and the importance of good form...

I love crossfit, I think it's fantastic exercise, but I really loathe people who are into crossfit as if it's a cult :(

Actually, CrossFit is about challenging yourself. It's about pushing your body to it's physical limits.

I would think this applies to all forms of exercise not just Crossfit.

I have been doing Crossfit since Spetember last year, after 5 months I have noticed a huge change in my abilities and strength. CF makes me do those exercises I would never do at gym (Squats, deadlifts, cleans).
I now love doing all of those.
I go to CF 4 times a week, balancing it with road running. CF has helped me improve strength and flexibility in my legs which has helped me overcome niggly knee injuries and can now run faster and longer than before.

Would recommend CF to anyone, as long as they going to the right box with proper coaches who ensure correct form and allow for proper progressions.

Don't bash it before you try it :)

I was so tempted to sign up for CF this month due to the Vitalty 25% discount thing but alas, some boxes are having issues or delaying their joining of Vitality as a partner... and the realisation also struck that I can not afford R1300 per month for a membership right now!!! :(

You go boy!

That's crazy expensive. I only pay R600 a month
Around CPT, I'd say between 1k and 1.2k is the norm for 3 x per week

e.g. from one of the cheaper boxes:
http://www.crossfittokai.co.za/getting-started/membership-options/
PREMIUM MEMBERSHIP/UNLIMITED ACCESS TO CLASSES
12 Month membership: R1045.00 per month

4 Month membership: R1265.00 per month

Your Premium Membership gives you access as many CrossFit classes as you wish to attend on a monthly basis.

This membership also includes access to ‘Open Gym’ and numerous visitors passes for friends and family.

INTERMEDIATE MEMBERSHIP / 3X PER WEEK ACCESS
12 Month membership: R825.00 per month

4 Month membership: R1045.00 per month

Your Intermediate Membership allows access to three CrossFit classes per week.

I think there is maybe one box around here which is under 1k for a month by month contract, but it's not the norm.

Crossfit Impi, the cheapest around CPT I reckon:

http://www.crossfitimpi.com/costs-policies/
Month to Month Billing R1000 per month Unlimited classes for the duration of one calendar month.

3 Month Agreement R2400 (payment up front)
(R800 per month) Unlimited classes for the duration of 3 calendar months.

6 Month Agreement R4200 (payment up front)
(R700 per month) Unlimited classes for the duration of 6 calendar months.
