Hi,

I'm currently busy getting an SSD for my laptop. I know Samsung SSD's usually come highly suggested. For a while now, I've seen Crucial SSD's on sale, offering 256GB SSD's for very low prices. Is Crucial SSD's worth it? Should I rather go for an Samsung, or is Crucial worth having a look at? I'm looking at buying the MX100 256GB SSD.

I've been using Crucial SSD's for over three years, still running fine.

My next buy will be Crucial as well due to their enterprise features (Power Loss Protection).

Crucial are great as they are priced reasonably. Certain Samsungs may be faster, but the price/performance just isn't there.

The MX100 is a fine drive. Samsung's 840 Evo does sometimes go on sale, but not as low as Crucial's offerings. Keep an eye out for similar offerings from ADATA and Corsair's LX family, those are also good choices.

The Samsung drives are so worth the few extra bucks. I was lucky to get one on a Takealot daily deal for a very good price.

The only issue with Samsung hard drives are the price difference. Yes, they are reliable, and faster. The question is, are they worth the premium? Reading the user reviews on NewEgg, the Crucial seems to be very good. My only concern is reliability.

Crucial has had a reputation for reliable mid-range and budget drives since the M4. Crucial is owned by Micron, which, together with Intel, manufacturers the NAND flash memory inside Crucial drives. It's the same memory that you will find inside Intel consumer drives. Though, obviously, there isn't as much QA as in Intel, it is good quality NAND. The Marvell controller of the MX100 isn't the fastest, but it is reliable and stable.

If you coming from a spinner you can put any SSD and you will be blown away. Get the Crucial man

As I said, I've been using mines daily for the past 3 years. Plus, with the enterprise features, and power cuts in South Africa - you won't go wrong with a Crucial drive. They are rock solid.

I have a Crucial M550 256GB in my home PC (LGA775 Quad Core) and a Crucial MX100 512GB in my personal laptop (Dell Inspiron i7) and have zero complaints so far.

I had a Super Talent 60GB ssd which failed just after the warranty expired, but get better perfomance (even on SATA II on the desktop) from the Crucial.

Samsung 250GB 840 Evo is only R100 more (Orange Online Store) than equivalent Crucial 256GB MX100 (Takealot). There is a noticeable performance advantage in favour of the Samsung.

Thanks!

... and why not to buy from Dion Wired without first checking for prices online:
Dion Wired: R3000 for 250GB Evo
Orange Store: R1750 for 250GB Evo
