Cruise Ships

Go on the Symfony or what ever it is called (Twighlight Cruises).

Very cheap, you can send them for R10K including spending dosh for a week. It departs from Durbs so I'm including air tickets.

My wife is going on the 5 day cruise end Jan (We have seperate holidays, now I get time to do some serious camping while she is gone :) )

I liked Royal Caribbean, did a 7-day from Fort Lauderdale-Key West-Mexico(Cozumel)-Cococay and Fort Lauderdale. Was the best one ive ever been on.

For something close the Sinfonia from Starlight looks good and i think MSC have a few ships floating around the south too.
 
oh yes and a word of advice, unless you're rolling in cash, take an inside cabin. There is really so much to do that you're outside/on-deck/somewhere 90% of the time and just sleep in the cabin so paying for something with a balcony and seaview imho is a waste. Unless of course u doing the whole honeymoon/romantic meals on the balcony overlooking the sea thing. (however if you fight you run the risk of one of u going over... ;) )

I have been on 9 cruises and can give the following advice

Leave out the South African based cruises, they are overpriced and not worth the money. Also the places they go to are not very inspiring
Never book an inside cabin they are claustrophobic
If they are over 60 I would not recommend the Caribbean as the stops are usually beach based and the places they go to are not very interesting unless you are going to do water sports
The best first cruise is the Mediteranean and I would go in summer. The sea is calm and the ports are varied. I would suggest at least a 10 day cruise and try including Italy and Greece. If you don’t mind it not being that hot the Baltic or Norway fjords are great places also. However the ports are very expensive
You can get great bargains and like air tickets the prices vary on a daily basis but expect to pay in the region of R1500 per person per day (all inclusive).
Don’t book the ships excursions as they are overpriced and you can do the same thing on your own for a fraction of the cost
The major cruise lines are all much of a muchness and I would suggest Royal Caribbean. Princess or Constellation lines

These are totally overpriced and are only 3 star. For the same price ($ is weak) and an inside cabin you can see Venice, Croatia and Greek Isles on a 4 or 5 star ship. This beats Bazaruto and Maputo

OK but for R10K will you be able to still go on this cruize if your two people? The R10K price is for both my wife and her brother.

I'm just asking as I wanted to take my wife on the Sinfonia (it was going to be surprise) but her brother beat me too it. Now I'm looking at alternative cruises. My boss did the one to Turkey 2 yrs back and he loved it.

And are you married or interested in Polygamy?:D

Had a look at those.... That just mean they have to fly and then the costs run up to a bit much for me. If I get the other siblings involved they might help but I do not think so... Times are a bit tight.
 
Go find out whether a ship is doing any affordable segments of their world cruise, often these are great bargains, cheaper than a local voyage. Or, do the RMS St Helena, she has excellent voyages and is a stunning little ship, I am afraid starlight has lost the plot, since when is Mozambique the only destination we have?

Indeed.

First the Melody and Symphony and now both replaced by the Sinfonia. Bigger ship, same bloody Italians, less cruise options. This season it's over 42 different laps (3 day cruises) from Durbs to Maputo/Portugese Isle/benguerra lodge :rolleyes:
There is one cruise proper of a week which goes as far as Mauritius.
The two remaining "proper" cruises are from and back to Italy at the beginning of, and at the end of the season.
So, what Starlight is actually offering is a boatload of 3 day "cruises" for 99.5% of the season.
If you ask me, and you don't live in Durbs, once you include airfares to the cruise price, and add on all the extras like alcohol you are left with a very expensive, quick and uninspiring holiday, which has you unpacking your suitcase in excitement on board and repacking it again in a blink of an eye as the 3/4 day cruise ends. Remember, most people take the first 4 days of a holiday to unwind before they begin relaxing.
