Cryptocurrency Mining

Interesting . I was involved with Unisa supercomputer (12 terraflops) few years ago. I was wondering what hardware do you need to do mining. Is there a formula like so many terraflops needed to mine 1 bitcoin? Time needed to mine etc. . And how much income you can generate.

I recommend reading some of the earlier posts in this thread or possibly some resources online relating to this first. There is already a lot of information about mining out there - no need for me to regurgitate it again.

Short version:
Different cryptocurrencies use different algorithms that can profitably be mined by different hardware. That is to say, it is possible to mine bitcoin with a CPU but you would not make a profit. To mine Bitcoin profitably, you need an ASIC (specialized hardware for mining bitcoin). Other currencies can be mined using GPUs, for example Ethereum and Zcash.
Formula for teraflops vs time required to mine one coin of a currency of your choice - no, no such thing. Because mining rate is measured in hashes per second not teraflops or gigaflops. Again, currencies differ in their mining rates - cannot compare the hash rate for Ethereum to the hashrate of bitcoin or ZCash.
Time needed to mine - depends on hashrate. Also, mine in pools to lower the risk. Pool mining - everyone pools resources and rewards.
Income - use whattomine.com

Some useful info on fan wear.

However we have seen some signs that are giving up early warnings that in 3rd to 6th month of operation if the fans are not maintained they could start degrading and ultimately failing at some point after that. There was almost no dust particles found inside the sleeve bearing after disassembling the fans to check them, however the lubricant that was plentiful when the GPU was brand new was almost completely evaporated in a bit less than just 3 months of use. Once the lubricant evaporates the performance of the fan starts degrading and things can start failing once the sleeve bearing starts to get damaged and clogged with dust. This is precisely why sleeve bearing fans are not that good for mining, so if you have video cards that you use for mining that have sleeve bearings you need to take more care for them. They need to be cleaned from dust more often and it is a good idea to lubricate them every few months in order to extend their life. This is especially important for mining video cards with limited warranty where you cannot just replace a card because of a failed fan after the 3 months warranty of these GPUs passes.

Our advice is to go for GPUs with ball bearing fans when possible when you are building mining rigs and not for ones with sleeve bearings. Ball bearing fans do tend to have larger life and be more durable especially under higher operating temperatures when compared to sleeve bearings.

Hi Guys

Need some advice pls: I am using EVGA mining card (P106-100 for mining) and onboard graphics for display only. Problem is that programs like MSI afterburner etc don't detect this card because its not being used for display. The card is running hot and I would like to set its fan profiles.

If that were true then you would never be able to set more than one card at a time. More likely you have a driver issue. Try a clean install with latest drivers from NVIDIA.

Does GPU-Z detect it?

Uninstall windows, then start from scratch.

It will be faster than to debug

GPU-Z does detect it. I installed the onboard graphics in last order. Maybe if I uninstall nvidia drivers and re-install?

Yoh... D3 DASH profitability has gone through the floor. How is the D3 performing on multi-coin mining? Nicehash/Prohash?

What are you currently pulling if you don’t mind me asking.

Nothing - mine only arrive early November, but dash profitability calc reports $400 a month per machine right now which is a tad down on the $5k of fairly recent.
