Crystal Web DSL performance feedback thread Part 4...

I've had my line with SAOL for a couple of years now and the data with CW. I've already informed SAOL to move the line back to Telkom. This can apparently only happen with effect 1 June. Then I guess I'll go with the Telkom uncapped account.

@Icemanbrfc, DNS should have no bearing on your latency after the IP has been looked up. This is a post I made in the Afrihost thread at one point:

DNS has no effect on ping whatsoever. It is nonsense. DNS provides name resolution services and that is it. Nothing more and nothing less.

Your internet connection does not go through the DNS server, nor would routing through it improve your speed as chances are you will be going through several other connections (potentially on the wrong side of the world) before heading back to where you wanted to go. This does not happen normally anyway.

What Google or OpenDNS might provide you is a slightly faster resolution of names to IP address and possibly some level of protection from known malware domain names.

You might get a quicker initial name resolution, especially if your ISP has a small DNS cache and doesn't see requests for that site often, but after the first request both your server and local machine will cache the request meaning that Google or OpenDNS will be slower if there is a large distance between you and their servers. There will be no improvement to ping tests at all except for possibly the initial lookup.

Just remember that not all dns servers return the same result, especially for cdn type applications
A lookup of www.google.com could give you an ip on your isp's backbone via the isp dns, but an ip in the UK via a dns hosted elsewhere.

Yep, but the local Google DNS should be fine in pretty much every case, it will definitely point e.g. YouTube streams to the local caches if it can.

I can never be having download speeds of 2mbps on a 20mbps line. This is ridiculous. My speeds use to be at around 14 to 16mbps. Argh

Hmm am i being throttled by CW after 7pm or is my exchange just congested.

When i ran a speedtest last night after about 8pm, down to 2mbps. This morning just before 6am, 16mbps on the speedtest.

So seeing that CW is "no more" who can you guys recommend with similar performance pre-Evonet, that includes a nntp service? or is it better going VOX & getting a usenet account?

That email that went out Saturday /Sunday that stated everybody should change over to the new username before the 9th had me wondering about shaping and a more pertinent, throttling.

hmmm, just saw that mail myself, ominous isn't it ....... like, what is happening today the 9th, da da da :crylaugh:

More likely they're shutting down the IS IPC and associated networks ...

Aye, gathered as much. Well today marks the one month I'm (maybe stupidly) giving them to provide the low ping I need and the replacement newsserver almost promised a week back. Tell the troops to pull finger DJ ;)

My line came again on the Sunday, but its dead again after a Telkom dude phone to reset something. My speeds were around 2mbps on a 20mbps line. Its darn frustrating when they do things on their side that just completely breaks it again

Well, I did not get that email. Maybe it was only sent to the people who did not change to the new network.

That sounds like the default state for an ADSL line. I know that because after the telscum techie came to fix my line, it connected at default 2Mbps. He phoned a call centre person to change the profile back to 4Mbps, maybe that action still needs to take place on your line to restore your fibre/VDSL to the correct profile.

I changed over the 1st morning when the changeover occurred.

Some people received an email regarding the changeover, I did not, so maybe this was supposed to occur in batches and I was in the last batch or you are not on some mailing list, who knows with CW. Proper Admin have never been their strong suit.

Does anyone know how to go about cancelling an account with CW? I know that it has to be done before the 19th of the month but there's no where on their web page, or in the client portal to cancel an account!

re: the email with username password, must I change router settings as well?
