Crystal Web DSL performance feedback thread Part 4...

I remember the first time I took over a PSTN switching section in Telkom. In the corner of the Managers office, there was this pile of folded computer paper reports. I aske what are those and I was told that every day, the digital exchanges generate these reports and they are sent to you. So I said and then? "no nothing, the end up on that pile, until it gets too much then they are thrown away'.

So because I came from transmission, I decided let me look at these reports for a while and see if there is something important . And it was! The reports were about all the circuits "busied out" automatically on a daily basis by the switch because they were "faulty". So instead of a process being set up to evaluate these, find the faults, and repair, it was simply easier to order more trunk capacity from transmission. …...

Still my line is in limbo... Still functioning, but so many disconnects now. Im at a point now, where im just using it until it eventually goes permanantly down. At which point i can re apply for my adsl line with Telkom. Such a pain, but oh well, what else is there to do

Good luck reapplying with telkom, tried to do that and was sent from pillar to post and couldn't get anything resolved.

Send a mail to fibre at openserve dot co dot za. It's not an official channel, but you might find someone helpful on the other end who will forward your issue to someone competent inside Telkom Retail.

The Crystal Web Saga Episode II: Openserve comes to the rescue, EvoNet does a duck and cover
In the wake of Crystal Web launching head-on into financial ruin and EvoNet’s management of the brand causing confusion for everyone, Crystal Web’s customers who took out ADSL or fibre bundles with the company still find themselves without internet more than two months later. Having gone through the motions of trying to recover payment from the company, Openserve suspended the company’s access to internet services that they managed for their customers, and EvoNet’s brand new customers found themselves unable to get support for their leased lines and unable to get answers as to what happened. Openserve last month opted to take charge of the situation in a bid to do right by Crystal Web’s customers, and began the process of moving all affected lines into the holding pool to allow customers to get another ISP to manage their line.

Just wow... The incompetence of the Evonet management team is jaw dropping. Makes me wonder, without those licenses how long can they keep on selling Internet services unlicensed? Am I going to lose connectivity part way through December?

Thank you @CataclysmZA for doing what MyBB was either to scared to do or just not interested in doing which is ironic since they cover the Internet sector. I owe you a beer for your reporting and shining a light on this situation.

Companies like EvoNet can resell the services of other ISPs who have IECS/IECNS licences because their upstream provider has the correct licences. They just act as a reseller. I suspect that's how they're keeping other fibre users online by converting those accounts into accounts that have access services resold by them, and internet connectivity for DSL customers is done through a provider like Internet Solutions, also by reselling accounts.

So I wouldn't expect you to lose connectivity, but I do expect Evonet to start addressing their financial situation in 2019.

But, they can't just become a reseller. There needs to be a reseller agreement/contract backing up their deals.
That is what those getting service this way should be asking Evonet to prove. No reseller agreement? Then get out now.
In theory, anyone who wants to complain to ICASA will have weak case if they have not done even this low level due diligence check.

Pretty sure this is what Paul Hijul is fighting. The fact that they dont have a licence, but using CW's is a breach of some sorts. I need to get out, because this is so messy right now

I feel for you. Even Afrihost cannot help you?

Negative.... I had a reply from OpenServe on twitter, who said they will try and sort it out. Lets see. But as of now, line is still functional.

Was hoping that Afrihost with maybe close ties to Openserve, might have done better, but its not happening. At this point in time, im just gonna ride it out, and accept it as one of those things

If your records are somewhere in limbo, details are not visible in the databases, but the line is still working, means a disconnect between the records available to the ISPs and call centres and what is actually working ...... Will take a while to find, may even mean someone must go and physically have a look. .....

Sigh

Anyone that wants to check, here are the two documents available to the public on the ICASA website.

No. 41811 GOVERNMENT GAZETTE, 3 AUGUST 2018
The XLS spreadsheet of I-ECNS/I-ECS license holders does NOT list Crystal Web or Evonet as having a license.

Crystal Web is listed as having a C-ECS license granted before 21 May 2014, and hence is deemed to be equivalent to an I-ECS licence, valid for 10 years (C-ECS) but could be 20 years (I-ECS), renewable.
There is a process to transfer a licence. The costs are the problem it is not a cheap process and is not automatically granted. Evonet has not exactly endeared themselves to anyone either.

Here is a very useful place to read all about licensing: https://www.ellipsis.co.za/service-licensing/

So I placed order with Afrihost but got message that other adsl operator is still active.. And at telkom they cannot do anything. If anyone else has any other ideas that I can try please let me know.

Have explained the holding pool story to telkom but noone can assist. Cannot order new line because there is still active adsl portion but there isn't.

Have you read the NAG article?

Here is an extract of what the known cases are and what you need to do.

  1. If you’re a current or ex-Crystal Web customer, and your line is currently syncing but not connecting to the net, you’re in the holding pool. You need to contact a new ISP, like Telkom Internet, or Afrihost, to claim your line from the holding pool to give you internet connectivity.
  2. If your line isn’t syncing, it may be suspended. You need to contact your new ISP to get them to liaise with Openserve to lift the suspension and move the line back into the holding pool.
  3. If your line is not suspended, and not syncing, and no-one knows what its status is, that’s a special case. Your new ISP needs to work with Openserve to figure it out.
  4. If your line is syncing and working, it’s an anomaly because this shouldn’t be possible, so expect a suspension eventually when the system catches up.

At the moment, the only ISP that seems to have the nouse to do something is AH.
BUT, it is quite sad that Telkom seems to be incapable of grabbing the opportunity as well.
If you want to go back to Telkom as your ISP, then be persistent until you get through to a Supervisor. By now, no senior person in Telkom should NOT be aware of this CW/Evonet issue.

This situation is worse then 1122!!! My word! Glad I got out long ago and moved to CISP.

Hi Geoff,

Did read the article and have now possibly tried all the solutions noted.

For option 1, never got the notification for the holding pool so only became aware of the problem when it ended up at option 3.

Have now ordered adsl line with Afrihost and explained that I was a Crystal/EVOnet victim. But they cannot help apparently. Cause the adsl portion is apparently active, but phoning telkom the technical department cannot see my line anymore. The new services are picking up a suspended adsl line, get to billing and they say my line is paid up.

Round and round I go. Tried phoning Crystal but it is just going to their mailbox.
