Crystal Web DSL performance feedback thread Part 4...

Had brief chat with CW management and it appears they are indeed aware of the issue. The feedback given was that they are still trying to establish under what conditions the issue is present as it's clear its not as cut-and-dry as only/all CT and EC users being affected.

I did request/suggest that they make it known that they are working on resolving even though they don't have the exact root cause at present.

Will they have a talk with their support agents as well? Seems they pretty much just told everyone to look at their hardware, even though it was becoming clearer and clearer with every support ticket with similar issues, that it isn't hardware related.

When I reached out over chat last night, I started off saying that this isn't isolated to just me and they it is well documented in the MyBB thread.

They escalated my query and requested they I send screenshots of my issues for them to add to the issue.

I would suggest anyone affected does the same.

I'm having the same issues on a Vumatel 20/20 line in CPT. NTTP speeds drop from 1.3MB down to 0.4MB in the evenings, streaming also has issues around then. Rest of the time the connection is fine. Must be some sort of IS issue, noticed some WA customers reporting the same and they are also on IS IIRC.

Neotel / Echo

Afrihost (Pty) Ltd (AS37611)

IPv4 Primary Peers:
AS327693 Echotel Pty Ltd
AS6939 Hurricane Electric, Inc

No mention of Neotel, and Neotel uses TATA Communications as their primary IPv4 peer.

Any comment from CW on the IPC price cuts? Saw they were missing from the article on the front page. Guess that should not surprise me really, but some comment - twitter or Htxt maybe? - would be nice.

And the IPC side?

From my understanding (which may differ from yours as you are a Telkom veteran) IPC is just the component between the client's CPE and the ISPs own. The effective network the client will use is independent of IPC as IPC is network agnostic (it has to be to remain consistent and fair across all ISP networks, right?)

So if ISP X purchases 1Gbe of IPC from Openserve, that 1Gbe is just available capacity for that ISP to run from their customers to the DC in which they have their POP. From the point the connection reaches the DC, the traffic leaves the control of Openserve and it is up to the ISP to decide how that traffic is routed. So if ISP X decides, they can route all traffic coming from IPC over their network which may comprise of multiple peers, international breakout and such. (In the case of Afrihost, via Echotel and HE)

Why would IPC have anything to do with ISP X's network beyond it needing to be adequate enough in capacity to serve all customers without congestion?

My CW line was fine during peak hours last night. First time in about 2 weeks... so maybe they have identified the issue. The real test will be Sunday eve during peak evening hours - this time slot has become my litmus test for ISP's.

DSL Technical Fault and Maintenance
Incident Report for Crystal Web
Investigating
Crystal Web has identified a technical fault in our network core resulting in higher latency and decreased speeds intermittently, but predominantly being experienced between 18:00 and 22:00. We will be replacing and upgrading hardware over the next 2 weeks with no expected downtime for clients during this process, which will resolve this problem.

Maintenance Details

Maintenance of the DSL Infrastructure is currently taking place with upgrades and replacement of hardware at network locations in Western Cape, Gauteng, and Kwa-Zulu Natal. This has no impact on FTTH services over non-Telkom lines.

Need to expand on this; upon some further digging I see that Afrihost uses also uses Liquid Telecoms, which owns Neotel. So while Afrihost doesn't use Neotel, they use Neotel's parent company. MickeyD isn't going senile after all...

NNTP not doing any better than half line speed the whole day so far. Hopefully just a hiccup and back to normal soon.

Been an issue for awhile on on my side, but today it's really been dragging - nothing higher than 10% of line speed.

At least streaming is working as it should.

OK, so after a week of dismal line speeds and latency, two escalated fault reports and finally comms from Telkom that my line issue has been restored and still nothing has changed, it is a known fault on CW network. If that is the case, why didnt CW support just tell me? Blame was laid at the exchange and telkom dragging their feet in resolving the fault.

Same with me lol
