Crystal Web (NEW ISP) ADSL Feedback

It cannot be IS... I just came from an IS-based ISP (Openweb) the IP address range is different, and all the throttling is gone.

Just btw, I hope you don't let Openweb's messing around of the IS bandwidth ruin's IS's reputation. They're one of my favourite backbones.

Streaming work fine? Twitch etc.? And is gaming stable? If those are good, I'm pretty sure it will be a stable account - but still more to be seen when the shaping policies are introduced. I look forward to the feedback of all of those people that will be starting on 1 June, and I look very forward to testing the service from 1 July :D

+1

IS rocks! (after 5pm ;)) Just not with OW!

+2.

IS is by far the most reliable backbone I've used. Even with OW I've rarely had any issues with my IS accounts. No massive latency spikes, random packet loss or inexplicable throughput issues like with that Yello business backbone.

Yep - can't wait to get off this Afrihost crap. Now since I've given notice to cancel my line, now they go and disconnect my session every night just after midnight, for no reason other than to just irritate me

CW you don't perhaps need more "testers" for YOUR NNTP server bfore launch? :D

I've noticed the same. Cannot even touch 4Mbs on my 8Mbs business uncapped.

Why does May have to have 31 days instead of 30?

Network status update:

We are experiencing minor international connectivity issues which are intermittent. Please report any such issues to [email protected] so that we can look at addressing the issue quickly...

"minor international connectivity" Never a good thing to hear. How long will this last normally and will it be frequent? Even though Afrihost has their off days, the main reason I moved to them was because they have a lot of backup if their main international backbone goes off. Do you also have backup in case your main backbone goes off?

It is infrequent and is being worked on by the network engineers.

This notice is a pro-active notice in case anyone experiences any issues...

@saa044 As far as I know Crystal Web has international links on SAT3, WACS and Seacom. Correct/No? So I'm sure there is backup if a cable goes down.

I'm guessing this is a small network issue somewhere? ...and I'm pretty sure we'll hear what the issue is/was sooner or later :D

Yes, this is a link issue on the international link that's currently being investigated. A few customers reported (and we picked up) on international speed issues on occasion.

So we 1) closed all new registrations as we think that this is the right thing to do, 2) escalated the issue with the relevant teams, 3) began a process for resolution...

As I have said before... I couldn't DO youtube during the day and most evenings before I changed. Streaming is more than acceptable, as for twitch don't use it.

Woke up today to see my torrents hitting near full line speed so what more can I say....

as for internet solutions, I have always disliked them. They are the ones who throttle. We had MPLS at work even on that I would see daily throttling. IS are all for corporates and give the man in the street the raised middle finger

Remember - only a few users have signed up thus far ....may be a completely different story once the masses start their downloads...

Just saying....

it certainly is the case that as uptake of an Internet service increases spare capacity comes under strain - so you have a cycle of building a network (and various components of the network) getting uptake and growing the network. However this is understood in the planning of an Internet service and in actual fact we are working on additional capacity coming on stream before the launch.

one of the reasons it is best to attract tech heavy users etc ... first is to get the business under pressure to begin with so that you grow on heavy usage cases rather than trying to pad your revenue on an unsustainable business model.

Our real guarantee that we will continue to deliver the best possible experience to users is our cancellation policy which allows a person to vote with their feet for another network. The DSL market in SA will reach full maturity when there are sufficient service providers who offer quality support, reasonable prices and month to month product terms. In turn we are a guarantor for a quality experience at colleague-competitors who offer quality support, reasonable prices and month to month product terms.

Actually that's a good question. I know Cybersmart are on Seacom.

Is there a backup service in case that goes down?

I know, and I have plan B for that.
I am trying to get fiber optic at a reasonable cost.
At the moment this ISP is the only one that can deliver. Neither Afrihost, OpenWeb, Cybersmart, MWEB, nor Axxess, can deliver!
