And thats where the debate was. Technically NNTP is not p2p. People (as was done in this thread), misuse the term. For a lot of people, p2p is synonymous with file sharing. However, technically its a specific type of file sharing. News servers are not peer to peer, they are server to client technologies.

When the term was first used in this thread, it was meant to imply "file sharing". A couple of geek debates later on the technicalities and this was changed to avoid the confusion ambroseg1 is currently experiencing.

Cool. Learning something today. However, when I chatted to Shaun via e-mail from the start, I said I download via NNTP and very rarely P2P. He said its cool as ONLY P2P will be shaped during the day. I specifically mentioned NNTP to him. If NNTP fell under the banner of P2P, surely he should have said so?

I wont post his email here, but I just re-read it to make sure I am not talking nonsense. What he did however say, was that other protocols might also be shaped going forward. Suppose that is the loophole that now makes NNTP also shaped. :-(
 
Hey CW

I know a lot of questions are being asked about an un-launched product, but will those who make it into the high percentile of P2P be able to see it on the portal?

Will there be a specific usage tracker that you are able to see what volume of P2P traffic you move? This would greatly help me as I am not sure how to determine whether any of my MMO's use this protocol :cry:
 
I'm officially a CW customer! Tried to connect last night after midnight but could not authenticate, connected first time this morning though. I'll have a lot to download these first two days, kind of built up a backlog after my Telkom uncapped was ended a week ago. :)

And NNTP can't be seen as "file sharing" really either - you don't "share" anything :whistle:

A Usenet newsgroup is a repository usually within the Usenet system, for messages posted from many users in different locations. The term may be confusing to some, because it is in fact a discussion group. Newsgroups are technically distinct from, but functionally similar to, discussion forums on the World Wide Web.

People dont share files on them? Really? I honestly thought people uploaded files to the newservers so others could download it. Guess Ive just been fooled all these years :)

In the sense of P2P - no, they don't. One user upload a file to a server, and another download the file from the server. Whereby with true P2P, one user by "seeding" uploads the file directly to other user(s) - i.e. they share with the user, directly.

If I upload an attachment to myBB, and you download that attachment, does that make myBB a file sharing site?

You get http file sharing sites too ;) Ie, rapidshare, etc. Yes, you could use MyBB as a filesharing website. Back in the day, we managed to use IRC for file sharing. File sharing on mybb (because it is http) would be client/server.

I know. I'm referring to the "definition" and "standard" :) A definition should not be open to interpretation I believe, it should be exact. These terms are being thrown around very loosely, by allot of people.

Anyways - let's not derail the thread. I was more attempting to make a joke, but it seems it's too early in the morning for me :)
 
took about four hours before my new account was up and running, but unfortunately far from line speed... had to switch routers as my Belkin 300N+ don't want to authenticate at all. from experience I kno it take some time for a line to be working fine.

speedtest test rather fine but download speed don't match that in the test.

at least I can browse webpages unlike OW but download speed don't come close to that of OW (used to run at 425kbps) currently around 100kbps. guess its teething problems.

I'm not really happy but also not really unhappy either.

File sharing can be on almost any protocol (http, torrent, news servers, http, imugr, email, irc+dcc, skype, whatever). If you are sharing a file its called file sharing. Its really not ambiguous :D

I joined CrystalWeb since they said that P2P/file sharing will be shaped (if that includes news servers that's fine with me).

I have said it before, and I will say it again. I want my legal services to placed at the top of the food chain compared to other services that are mostly used for pirating. If you are in the minority of the people using it to download legal content then that's kind of sucky, but I don't want my streaming and gaming to be affecting because half of the internet has to get the latest Game of Thrones distro.

Dunno started some download earlier(on 4mb unc) and it seems to be doing pretty well ^^

Will monitor it over a few hours :P

Agreed, I would much rather have my streaming work flawlessly than have my downloads run at 100% at all times of the day. Not only is streaming more convenient but you save money on HDD space, been a while since I have had the need for more than 1 external HDD.

As a side note I wonder how many ISPs would be willing to change their business model if VoD takes off in this country as a replacement for DStv, because most of the uncapped packages out there don't stream well at all and those that do usually start shaping/throttling you very quickly. Capped account might be the solution for people who are home in the evening only but with families that have people at home during the day the capped account might just not be feasible at current prices.

@CW: If at public launch you guys get in a flood of new customers and my streaming becomes choppy on the standard uncapped I will upgrade to your VoD account and see how that runs, hope its silky smooth.

Being able to use the net during the day is just how our accounts work. :D

But the poor download speeds are are only on the international side of things and are being resolved. Customs are holding the final piece of the puzzle which should see configuration of the resolution begin on Friday, at which point not only will you have awesome daytime speeds and general internet, but your downloads will revert to what you're expecting as well.
