I presume they only cache content based on view count and certain channels. There is over a billion videos on youtube!

Would be interesting to know how the CDN works, technically.

IE, if you request an uncached video, are you redirected to a CDN node that has it, or does your local CDN node retrieve it from somewhere?
And if the 2nd case, maybe the issue is an overloaded inter-CDN-node network?

I know mweb has a youtube cache, so I presume cw gets the content through peering through cybersmart. Google also moved from cinx to jinx so I presume there is also a google cache in jhb

This was kind of my point.
Google has set up Google Global Cache (GGC) servers in South Africa.

Does CW not utilize these Global Caches?

If you can come into live chat - so I can look up a few things, I can look into it.
 
Yeah, look, this does sound like all I do is watch the tube, ( which is partially true, as i learn a lot from tuts that I watch ) , but this is just and example of a service ( in this case streaming ) which is supposed to work like a charm, yet we see vastly different results on the same type of links, granted that the results will never be exactly the same, but if Paul can watch a 4K video without buffering on a 10Mb link - I would expect to be able to do the same, and I can't - which to me is like I'm not getting the full benefit of a 10Mb line, if that's what it is capable of...

we do, there has been a few instances - I think, but haven't made sure of this, that in all instances there are two common denominators: use of an alternate DNS service (unotelly for example) and the subscriber being in outside of one of the massive 3 (PE, Bfn and EL are metros but ....)

It is something being looked into because it concerns me greatly, as does a few oddities with the shaper that have been brought to our attention.

Because we can exclude the shaper playing up here, we'd need to perform some complex routing analysis from your connection to determine the root cause of any problems that may be arising. Can I reach out to your this evening when you're at home so we can run some tests?
 
Hi good day

I just want some feedback from Crystal Web users, I need to know how good the youtube streaming is, and how bad the shaping gets during the day on a 2Meg line?

Backstory:
I recently moved home , I had a 4 meg line and the Bolton uncapped option, but the new place is too far from the exchange and syncs at less than 3 meg , so I am considering downgrading to a 2meg line, then getting full uncapped either from Crystal Web. I absolutely love the service I have gotten from @lantic, but for the money I really miss my throughput and might be able to make up for it by going the full uncapped rout and having my downloads finish a few hours after 6 (like finish at 10) to make up for the slow line.

I haven't watched 4k videos - was busy working on something when the lazy schmucks did the test in the office ...

But this is exactly the point and why we have an open ticket on your marker for performance. There are dozens of reasons why performance can be suboptimal for any given client and there is the standard ring of "best effort service" (which is applicable on all of the links ...). BUT best effort should mean that - making an effort to get the service top notch and identify what can be fixed and by whom. Unfortunately this often depends on getting an arduous troubleshooting process and engaging with various commercial partners - which introduces delays and gives us premature grey hairs. This is also why we are so grateful for our supportive and engaging customers and why we welcome extensive and exhaustive feedback - including when it is bad news.

To be honest, it's too early to tell. Products aren't even launched yet
There are issues on the network which the guys are trying to resolve.
 
Hi guys. Any word on when you will be able to offer 20mbps vdsl accounts?? Currently using the 10mbps uncapped but as I now have a 20mbps line would prefer to use it to its full potential.

We may in fact offer this to existing customers within the next few days.
