Crystal Web (NEW ISP) ADSL Feedback

Yeah i suppose that's why I was asking all of this. Maybe instead of streaming for 5 hours, I can for instance play a extra hour with my daughter and play a bit of Defiance, as that does not chow to much bandwidth. From my side I want to do everything I can to help CW where possible. :)

And we really do appreciate it. We don't demand it of customers as we're a business and need to get our own damn forecasts in line, and price appropriately, but having responsible users on the network is vital.

If high usage customers could simply understand and accept the realities we still face in SA with respect to high capacity costs, and ask "what can I do to help?" we'd be in a far better position overall. If ISPs help to educate the market in this respect as well, we'd be far better off. If a user thinks its okay to say "I want, I want, I want" then one shouldn't be surprised when your service provider adopts the same attitude in return.

Rather than this be confrontational by way of added thresholds, new policies, reducing the value, increasing pricing etc, we'd rather onboard customers in a manner that helps to explain how we keep costs low, and what you as a customer can do to ensure that it remains this way.

I've always held, and still do, that the vast majority of users on a network are very understanding of the realities of the broadband ADSL market in SA and willing to do what they can to not be labelled abusers, as they're not. If ISPs simply listened to these folk (which is what the directors of this business have been doing for years now), you'd gain valuable insight into how one should engage with this market. High usage customers in general are willing to pay more for their usage - give them an affordable option to do so, and stop calling them abusers when you give them the tools to abuse you, price your product incorrectly, and then spend millions driving a price-war downwards in the market.

That's my Friday semi-rant. Hope you enjoyed it.

Perhaps I should blog this stuff? And call myself a doctor. Hmmm...

Is there a similar usage ethos capped users should be following?

Capped used to be priced properly. Then a certain ISP realised their uncapped was in disarray and repriced capped to move customers over without losing them. This has resulted in a few things:

Breakages (how an ISP makes money on capped) have reduced as customers have become acutely aware of their usage; use it to the max at the end of the month to "get their money's worth"; and only buy what they really, really need.
Prices have been reduced to ridiculous levels
Quality of capped products has reduced

With regards to usage patterns, it still really does help to schedule large downloads but we don't demand it.

But there needs to be added value to capped - we're bringing it soon. ;)

Breakages, I assume refers to unused bandwidth? So come month end whatever the customer hasn't used gets forfeited?

Yeah, price per gb is remarkably low but as a capped customer one would expect quality to be at between 80%-100% of max line speed at least 50% of the time on all protocols.

Re downloads: I assume 12am-6am is still king for the ISP?

With that in mind would your upcoming added value offering incorporate an after hours allotment of gb's to be consumed between 12am-6am?

Hi CW

I am really enjoying your new product, it is performing great so far. Is there any update on your webpage / client portal? It would be great to be able to monitor how much of the unshaped I have used and even better if there was a topup option.

Thanks!

We spent an age getting the products and performance right. The products changed our data structures, so it has been redesigned, and the site and portal are just about there. We will release a preview to existing customers soon, followed by a full release upon launch. :)

HAHA. That's why I asked my friend the other day why he buys a Iphone 5s. He said because it is stable. When I asked him what he actually did with the phone regarding it's "stability" he said whatsapp, facebook, email, the normal apps a Nokia Symbian phone can do. Then I proceeded to ask him if he only does that on his phone, why can't a phone like my 5.5" Hisense phone do the same at a lesser price? He said because it's not apple, so there we have it, it's just a phone made to brag with lol. Sorry for the people here who own's iphone's, not trying to be nasty with you, but no iphone user could ever justify the price to me before.

And the best part about an iPhone is you cannot even bluetooth a file to another bluetooth enabled device.

Well, strangely enough, the open candidness of CW's communications with us made me do the unthinkable - upgrade to uncapped and unshaped.
I made the funds available, and decided that was the best way forward. I still feel as if the Fusion account is a 100GB capped account with relaxed shaping afterhours. Great for me, not so much for the flatmate wanting to torrent during the day.

Even better, I am actively aware that this is still a "trial" and not to go overboard at the buffet. I have asked the housemate to not torrent all day long, to only get what they need and not download the internet. Responsible internet user, that's me!

I still prefer the uncapped option, as I still have the mentality that I can use what I need and be done with it. I don't want to have to monitor usage all month and then try blast the remainder of my cap, which may or may not leave me without Internet for a couple of hours. Because it's use it or lose it is a terrible thing. And yes, if I paid for 100GB, I want my 100GB. That is why uncapped is fantastic. No getting cut off, no counting pennies, and I can download something without doing mental calculations first.

So I am happy to pay that little bit extra for piece of mind. And I thank CW for having the balls to come out and tell us that we need to be on the right account for usage. Not like other ISPs that promise uncapped, and shape / throttle / share you to death.

Can any of you guys ping this address and tell me what you get?

Guys, if you'd like to discuss pricing please use our chat function, mail [email protected] or our support desk. Pricing is also on the website.

My inbox is getting manic and I can no longer use it as a tool at this rate to discuss these things as we then don't have a record on our own internal systems.

Always best to get these things in writing, from our official channels instead. :)
