Hey guys, was wondering if any of you had any problems playing CS Source while playing online.

Got a machine running a E6600, 4gb DDR2 800 (2x 2gb), 2x 500gb (7200 rpm) & 1x 500gb (7200rpm), intel gold motherboard, Nvidia 250 1025 DDR 3 (point of view), 23" monitor.

Running CS at 1080p (tried multiples to be honest), the lag happens on all resolutions.

Running Windows 7 Ultimate (latest updates for all drivers and patches)

Can't remember Power Supply, but i remember I spent about R800+ on just the PSU so it must be somewhere around 650? Not sure

I have a 4mbps uncapped ADSL line (never really had problems with it..a while back, my latency sat around 200ms, although as of late, +/- 5 to 15 MAX)

So, I've checked if any unnecessary services/processes are running in task manager.. i've closed all those I don't require.

The game works fine and runs at full FPS for the first 15 min, but after a while... the game starts the stutter... The sound also stutters, almost seems like i'm hitting a bottleneck on something..

To my knowledge, my specs for the machine I play on are sufficient to play the game.. but it's strange, I don't know whats going on or why it stutters...

Could anyone suggest fixes for this?

Sounds like a driver issue. or could be tempreture management. Download some logging software to log the tempreture of your cores , mobo and gcard. See what their extremes are.

The fact that it happens after 15-20 mins sounds like its a buildup of some sort, either of heat or maybe a memory leak but others would have complained the same about the memory leak. Also maybe try changing the power connector on your graphics card, maybe its not making sufficent contact and can't draw enough power.

I think the problem is caused by playing such a crap game, lol :P

Sorry, I just had to :o

But all drivers are up to date.... Strange thing is, it happens when I play and its fine to play for an hour or 2... and the next day, it buggers out...

I'll install temp monitors, but the fans in the case should keep the temp to the medium I reckon..
got one of those coolermasters, forgot model, but paid around 1k for case and all fans included.

Will also change the power connecter for gfx card, possible solution... will post later with results from your suggestions

So, it works on some days and other days it doesn't?

Yip.... very bizarre... 6/7 days it starts doing it's stuttering thing.. but theres days I can play when it doesn't.. I also checked if that windows 7 antivirus thing was scanning, but it wasnt.
Also installed a hard drive monitor to check activity, but nothing out of the ordinary whilst its stuttering

Can you check your ping when it is doing it's stuttering thing? I know you don't think it is it, but maybe you checked it when the game "wasn't" stuttering. :)

Edit: BTW, is this only happening in CSS?

I checked, was sitting around 10ms... nothing out of the ordinary... but even pressing "ALT + TAB" to goto windows to check task manager would take 10 seconds to respond before it actually does it...
When i finally do get to windows... even my mouse has a hard time of showing a smooth scrolling experience.. Even opening task manager itself takes its time...

So to answers your ping related question specifically, it's not internet speed related... more hardware and/or OS imo... just have no idea what

and additionally, im gonna be lamo and say I only play CSS ;) I don't game much, but when i do... I play CSS.. played some far cry 2 and LOTR:online for a while, they had similar issues

Can you move your page file to another drive?

Had a friend with similar issues and it was his GPU that was getting to hot.

In your case, I would say GPU heat or HDD failing.

What graphics card do you use? I had an issue with a Point Of View card on which some of the little heatsinks on the chips became loose. They'd overheat with time, causing the machine to freeze after a while.

So, POV Nvidia GTS 250 1GB.

Yip... that 1.

Will move over PF after I checked that cabling has been changed wrt power to the gfx card..
I find it odd though, cause that means it overheats after 15 min of playing? Doesn't it take hours before it reaches the point of "overheating"...

Nope, my friend played GRID and he could play about 5mins and then it overheated.

Will give it a shot tonight and place some heat monitoring on the GPU... see what that comes back with. any suggestions as to what software allows this?

Sorry, speedreading caught the rabbit in this case.

No quite. Have you seen how rapidly the temperatures can rise on the monitors? Chipset temperatures are quite dynamic.

Agreed.

Any feedback on the stuff that you tried?

ok, here's the feedback.....

1. I tried another power cable connecter.... no difference
2. installed rivatuner to monitor temp of the core... idle sits at 50, while playing CS:S it goes up to 78.. even reaching 82 degrees... dont think thats normal?

Any suggestions? Can i "downclock" my card? Would that work?

I'm not an expert on CPU temps - there are much more knowledgeable people around. But it does seem high - maybe try new thermal paste between the CPU and the heatsink. I've also experienced overheating problems with heatsinks that are not mounted and fastened properly before. But overheating of the CPU generally cause the CPU to simply switch off (rather than risk dying), AFAIK.

Not CPU though, this is the GPU
