DA blames ANC for recession.

South Africa cannot do anything about the recession, economist Dawie Roodt of the Efficient Group said today.

# SA hits first recession in 17 years

# DA blames ANC for economic woes

He was reacting to first quarter 2009 Gross Domestic Product data released earlier.

According to Statistics SA, GDP for the first three months of this year tumbled an annualised 6.4 percent after declining 1.8 percent in the final quarter of 2008.

According to economists, two consecutive quarters of negative growth meant an economy was technically in recession.

"The main reason for the recession is manufacturing and mining ... and they are doing badly because SA is not exporting," Roodt said.

"Are we going to force the Americans to buy more platinum?" Roodt asked. Yes, the ANC should force them!

He emphasised that there was nothing South Africa could do about the contraction in its growth as long as the global economy was in recession.

"We should maybe concentrate on sectors other than mining and manufacturing," Roodt said.

He added that even if the SA Reserve Bank cut interest rates "by 500 basis points," given the global environment, "this wouldn’t achieve anything".

Yes it would. It would save me tons of money. Come on ... Do it... You know it makes sense.... :D

DA MP: Government could do more to curb recession effects..

Then again I wouldn't have read it with an accurate title like that, cause I woulda known how boring it was from the get go.

Just doesn't have the same ring as: DA blames ANC for recession

Perhaps next time they should just make it: DA declares WAR as ANC goes into recession.

If you gonna lie, go big my little cowboy journo's

I am sure, there will come a time in (South) Africa, when the 'locals' will pray for 'a' DA to criticize the ruling party. It will be all in vain though. That what will replace 'DA', will be far worse than DA will ever be! Remember - This Is Africa ! God bless :D

I think it's a little ridiculous of the DA to blame the ANC for not protecting us from the recession. Gordon Brown hasn't protected England. Obama hasn't protected America. Nobody could have realistically put policies into play to avoid this as nobody really expected this to happen. Was it only a matter of time? Probably but i think to a large extent it caught everyone off guard.

Hmmm... on the other hand, the newspapers may be starting to target a different demographic.

This demographic, which I will call "A", has a certain antagonism towards a another demographic, which I will arbitrarily call "D".

A great way to get members of the "A" demographic to pick up a newspaper is to show them a headline that appears to bash members of demographic "D". Only on reading the rest of the article will the A's find out that the D's were actually talking sense all along. Before you know it, a whole bunch of A's are turning into D's, there's more support for the D's, the country does better as a whole, the middle class expands and what do you know: more people can buy newspapers.

The problem with this is: A's only read headlines.

Ja but dude, just looking here at the current affairs section of the forum, how many "debates" have started here becuase of inaccurate reporting, only to deteriorate into mudslinging etc and getting people hot under the collar, eventually it could possibly be worse than "vloeking an okes mom" on the net, and there is that danger that it could go further, I'm all for educating the general populace in the ways of politics by way of the media, however misinformation could cause big probs...

Just my two pennies worth...

The ANC should take necessary steps to ensure that South Africa is the only country to escape effects of Global Economic Crisis.

Let's not have the ANC f*cking things up more as they are prone to doing. Rather they just leave things alone than get involved in things beyond their understanding. The markets will sort themselves out.

When the credit bubble burst America and England were hit hard. Very hard. They had no chance to prepare. Here in sunny Africa we looked on and our government claimed that we will weather the storm. South Africa had what it takes to weather the crisis.

Now, more than a year after this crisis began it hits us and we are surprised? WTF?

I know nothing about economics of this sort but are you telling me that if our gov did not go into denial more than a year ago but rather did more to try and protect South Africa we would not have been a bit better off?

I don't say the gov could have stopped the recession, but they sure as hell could have done more to ease the impact.

This is only the beginning for us. We will now have to see where it takes us.

in short the anc are to blame for some of the issues not being dealt with, poorly handled and misnanagement. seriously lol to much credit == world ****up, not anc in part.

i wish da would return to being an opposition than to being a moaning bitch about everything.

and that DA moron fails to acknowledge the government's good work through its infrastructure program that has kept our construction industry afloat as they lost contracts overseas right, left & centre! if it weren't for that then this GDP drop could have been much worse & DA sheep would still whine.

Explain more what they could have done and what issues they are to blame for?

How do they stop or help the situation? What can they do to increase business for companies when people are not spending money?

just go out side and walk the street, have a look around and you will at least see one or two issues that has been piss poor managed.

maybe something like, less suffocation of businesses ? jobs can't just pop up by themselves; they are created when the demand exceeds the output and there needs to be an increase in the workforce which should happen when one can do more and more business and so on.

clearly you misread what i said which is: anc are not to blame for the recession, but they are to blame for some issues we are struggling with today such as for example top people getting to much money and the actual workforce are so underpaid and misused its not even funny.

im not saying the anc should be jesus and perform miracles, that is bit of a over expectation and definitely taking over in 1994 they had to cover not just the white population but everyone all of a sudden with a system in place that catered for the minority. there are however things that could have been done more correctly than it has been like for example punting out about everything that has to do with The White Man and swapping it with The Black Man.

i guess you never sat in with a government body meeting ?, few i had to unlucky attend they avoided the White Plans like a curse or anything remotely to do with it. rather save face and not use those, but implement whatever else was available...

Maybe Mr George has a limited understanding of how the global economy works, and he thinks we are in isolation.

"This not only confirms that our economy is now in a full-blown recession, but also that the ANC government has not taken the necessary steps to ensure that we survive the worst effects of the global economic crisis," DA MP Dion George said in a statement.

To judge if SA have done good or bad, one has to look at other developing nations economies, I will go out on a limb here, but I'm sure they would love to have contracted by 6 and bit percent.

He called on the Reserve Bank to cut interest rates by at least 100 basis points as "a much-needed measure to stimulate domestic demand, and get the economy going again".

What was the last rate cut again? That is what the Reserve Bank have been doing.
