You must have signed up for something, because they got your details somehow?

Not maybe an anti-etoll petition?

NO. I hate spam. I go out of my way to make sure I don't get any. I'm on the opt-out list. If an institutions form asks for permission I say no. I even report spam to spamcop ffs.

They are unethical, simple as that.

OK, so you forgot where you gave your details. No problem then.

I am also on the opt out list. Also got their messages. They don't even give you an unsubscribe option on the sms, don't know about the email because I immediately deleted it. Google also said it was spam.

You're being a dick Gary.

Dude, it's not a long stretch to assume that at some point you might have used your e-mail on some website contact form or petition, or something and either not read the fine print or maybe intended later to remove it. The fact is, they got it somewhere and used it. People use their details online all the time and maybe that one time you let your guard down. Anyway, it's not the end of the world, I get hundreds of spam messages a day, I just delete them and move on with my life. It's when I start crying about them, that my time gets wasted.

The fact is that even if that is the case, they should allow him to opt out

Man this last week I've heard more "DA PLOTS!!!!!111!!!TWELEVEN!!!1!" than I can count. I'm certainly not saying they're infallible, or even incorruptible, but I sincerely doubt they are "plotting" nearly as much as we are being told.

Oh there was an unsubscribe link to a dodgy url. I have unsubscribed (I hope).

But Gary making like I am at fault, when I'm fanatic about spam, shows his political blinkers. Sorry Gary, you are wrong.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or you're being dilly.

Go live in Jozi or even PE and see how great the ANC runs a place. I would expect people of CT to especially be driven to vote DA seeing as they are living in their head quarters. But I suppose when you get used to good service delivery you seem to forget that the rest of the country has to deal with rubbish.

I don't mind DA spam because it actually does give useful information about registering and the need to vote. I much prefer that to the cr@p I get from Cell C and Nigerians the whole damn time.

Agreed good post

After the third sms, I actually decided to see if I'm registered.

Well played, Helen Zille. :)

It's either DA register to vote or ANC Please call me.

LOL @ the people threatening or deciding to not vote DA after this. If anything, threats/decisions like that simply highlight the fickleness of the general South African voter. And yet, some of the same people snicker as those taking food parcels for an ANC vote..

I agree... these are crucial elections. I'm glad the DA is going hardcore and trying to light a fire under some people.
The truth is that apathetic people need a wake up call.
We have to change this crappy government and they are going to need every vote.
Those whiners who are threatening are probably too lazy or stupid to vote anyway.

People really need to see beyond the SMS's and the party who sent them. The problem is that able voters are not registering and/or voting. I laud any group or individual that promotes democratic involvement as the current Government has no respect for the public it serves. If anything, there needs to be more opportunities for the public to have its say in Government decisions. I for one would have loved participating in a referendum around e-Tolling. Doing something as insignificant as getting off your arse and having your say with a significant mark on a ballot is where a Government catches a wake-up.

Anything more than one SMS is too much, one would have to be stupid to not think that...

I agree that there should be an opt-out or removal link.
But the more than one thing was probably just a glitch.
These things happen unfortunately.
People need to ask themselves "five minutes after death will it still matter that much to me?"

Oh, so they are using glitchy software? Maybe they need to stop being like a ANC-run municipality and test things and think things through before implementation.

And thanks for coming to the next point, those seconds wasted reading and then deleting some spam political SMSs took away some of that time they had when alive and possibly even took of time due to stress of having their personal space being repeatedly invaded thus even shortening their life, so yes it does matter..

Jeeeeez I cannot believe the apathetic retards that have threatened to change their vote because they got a few emails. I hate spam as much as anyone else, but fck, no way am I prepared to stand by and and let a corrupt ANC continue to destroy our country. Violence, crime, corruption, filth, greed, rapes, murders. Wake the fck up !!! What is a few emails once every 4 years ?

I have recently become a South African citizen, so the reminders were useful to me. Indeed, when I went to the Craighall Park polling station (DA heartland, I would imagine) it was virtually empty, so I feel that the spam SMSes were probably necessary for the National interest.

I'm not necessarily a fervent DA supporter but I think that, for the good of the Country, the ANC badly need their majority eroded.

There were a few posters above who posted that, after receiving the SMSes, they had gone along to check that they were registered and found that they weren't, so this campaign, although not entirely desirable, is defendable.

I don't think anyone is going to change their vote, but it got really irratating when they sms'ed me 6 times phoned me 4 times and e-mailed me. When they phoned me I said that I am registered and that I already voted there 3 times - but they insisted I check again. Somehow they still thought I was in a different province when I never even voted in that Province before.

There was not a lot of people registering at my voting station either, but I know but how many people could really be added to a suburb in 2 years? And registering takes 5 minutes and there was six people at mine when I was there. If it was the same through the two days, it is quite a few people registering.
