Dashboard Cameras

Does it come with the suction cup connection, I see Take A Lots website doesn't state that is comes with this so just checking?

yes it comes with a suction cup and one that you can clip onto things

its noisy because the window is down, original file is 145MB and compressed it to around 17MB so the quality is a little comprimised but in the raw file the number plates are clearly visible.

I bought one of these: http://www.blackvue-sa.co.za/dr550gw2ch16gb.html

I think I got it for an okay price as Laserguys, R4200. Front camera record at 30fps@1080, back at 30fps@720. Works really well and installation is quite easy. Also has a really nice wifi feature that lets you use your phone to connect to it to download, view videos. It deletes old footage as space gets low and comes on automatically when you start your car. It's got GPS as well for speed and location info. It takes about 10 seconds after you switch on your ignition before it starts recording. I'm going to buy a magic box for it as well. This'll allow it to come on even if the car is off. It's got motion detection in case someone bumps your car etc. It also tags videos as normal, event, or parking videos depending on what you were doing at the time. Firmware is upgradeable as well. The only gripe I currently have with it is that the bitrate is only 6mbps for the front camera and 2 mpbs for the rear. That's disappointingly low and can be noticed in the videos that's not to clear. The rear camera is also quite crap at night, where the front does a good job. Here's some videos from today, driving back from the Freestate.

R4200 sounds pricey compared to R1200 but I like the GPS features, I suppose thats the redeeming feature.

I've bought myself a dash board mount for the Samsung Galaxy S4 and I tested it driving to work (10 minutes) and it was very stable, HQ too.
Since i sorted out my GPS now, I am selling the mount (initially used the S4 as my GPS) so if anyone is keen, PM me, I'm selling the mount for R100 on Gumtree.
Point is, this works great for those 'flat' phones like the Z10 and S3 and S4 and Iphones especially if you want to use it for recording.

Do these dash cams come with cables that you need to plug in to keep it going or are they battery operated? Also, if battery operated typically how long do they last?

the one I have is supplied with a 3m powercable from the camera to the cig lighter

the battery in the unit I have lasts 90 minutes

if you allow fear to control your decision making process what is the point of living?

do you live so you can be dictated by fear? To me that sounds like a crappy position to take on life.

My Genius DVR590 just arrived.

Fitted it quickly, doesn't look too bad. It's a bit bigger than what I would've liked but I'm not prepared to splash R4000+ right now.

Ran the power cable neatly along the windshield, down the side and along the underside of the dash, and had about 15 or 20cm worth of cable length left over which I hid under the dash.

Will give it a test run later today and check out the quality.

So far it looks decent for its price.

Does your house have walls or burglar bars?

Living in SA I think all of us make decisions based on fear.

I live in a flat with no walls surrounding the building and no burglar bars on my windows.

I drive my car with the windows down and the doors unlocked.

I think more people should be getting dashcams. I just witnessed a smash and grab on vanguard drive. Part of it was caught on the camera at the back. I was in the right hand lane heading north and the incident occurred in the bus lane. I was too far for the camera to make out any faces.

Only problem I am having now with my camera is that it keeps resetting the time to June 2013 so the recording has a timestamp that does not reflect today's date. Will upload this evening when I get home.

I agree, I've been saying the same thing to my friends and anyone I know who cares to listen- I even convinced my boss to purchase one.

The only negative as such is that I too am guilty of breaking many rules of the road so if the memory card were to fall in the wrong hands I would be in a lot of trouble.

How would they know it's you driving? Does it point to the inside of the car?

No way of knowing who the driver is. I even turned off the audio recording function as I do not need my conversations to be included in the video.
