Dashboard Cameras

If you're going to spend that much on a dashcam, why not get a GoPro or a Drift? You can use these as action cams too for cycling, skydiving, surfing etc.

I'd recommend the Drift for an ease of use point of view.

Hmm let me see, the last time I checked, a Go Pro was about R5k also very bulky on a windscreen. The Drift is also very large.

I want something I can put on there and not remove it again.

With the blackvue I can get my videos off with my phone.

Also the auto on features and park recording makes it worth it and then it starts to look cheap compared to a Go Pro.

Just how I think...

A GoPro or Drift does not automatically record when you start the car. It does not have an accelarometer, GPS, nor does it log your trips. They are also much more expensive than the average dashcam.

Got three from China off eBay, cost about R 750 landed here. It clips over rear view mirror and has 2 cameras, although I only use the front one. Records on a 32Gb micro-SD card. Picture is 640 x 480 with date and time and quality sufficient to read a number plate 50 metres away. You start and stop it with a remote

The ideal for me would be a RVM replacement. However, all the RVM dashcams I've seen are made for LHD cars, so the dashcam controls are on the wrong side, and the camera is offset the wrong way (though many are adjustable, I believe).

I'm really enjoying the two mini 0801s I got from China, GPS model with 32GB miniSD. They're tiny, hidden behind the RVM. Fit and forget until needed.

There are Genuis Dash Cams available at a fairly good price from someone I know. PM me if you would like details

I drove my now infamous monza this weekend with the genius dashcam fitted.

First time I had an issue with it, the cig light fitting actually is big and bulky and thus lost power a few times so I had to keep pushing it back into the socket, other than that it still operates normally.

Came here to ask the same question.

I've used all the esquire dashcams ... (BTW, I like most of Esquire products), but dont buy their cams, honestly! That particular model is only HD when combining both front & back recordings into one video. Individually each cams res sux. The GPS tracking is nifty, I'll give it that. But only works on their bundled software to embed it into the video.

Thanks. Decent cam res is a must for me. Think I will rather spend a bit more on a decent one. Any recommendations?

I have two of them and they're not all that bad. If you specifically want a higher res then sure look elsewhere. But for everyday recording of your daily drive it works pretty well imho.
