Dashboard Cameras

Yes, I get that :D

But why would you need one specifically for a RHD vehicle.

We are just bringing them in because its cheap and looked cool on the catalog, so if it doesn't work its no big loss.

The problem with LHD rear-view mirror dashcams fitted into a RHD car (as in SA) is that the controls are perfectly positioned for a driver on the left hand side of the vehicle and often difficult or impossible to get at from the right-hand side. The dashcam-mirror is made to be angled to a driver on the left, so the display screen built into the RVM is often wrongly angled or on the wrong side of the mirror. And though the camera lens is usually adjustable, many RVM dashcams don't have enough adjustment to get the full field of view a RHD vehicle requires - remember, the mirror is already angled the wrong way.

Good points.

Will have a look at the units we ordered and let you know how it goes when thy land.

Hi all,

My partner would like a dash cam and has been looking @ the GoPro's. Pricing is ridiculous on the GoPro's and they milk you dry with accessories that you need to buy to do simple things.

So in your wisdom, which dash cam's readily available in SA would you recommend? We are thinking of getting 2- 3 of these.

Your input is appreciated.

GoPro is great, but insanely expensice and not meant as a dash cam unless you plan on only recording a "single event" like track day or something... look at these:

Otherwise on dx.com you can get them for next to nothing but takes a month to get to you :)

You want a DASHcam and your first thought is GoPro?

They are POV action cameras, you can use them as dash cameras in a pinch but that is definitely not what they are intended for. If you're into EXXXTREME sports like snowboarding, skydiving or motocross they're great, or even if you go hiking in the mountains or something. They are poor dash cams because to mount them on anything they need to be in the housing which usually means you can't charge them, and they have a ridiculously short battery life.

They are expensive, but once again in one-brand-only SA, the cheaper and better alternatives aren't available apart from maybe the Ion Pros if you're lucky.

Anyways, look at car places for dedicated dashcams, some record forwards and backwards too.

For a GoPro type camera, look at the SJCAM SJ4000 here. Basically a GoPro knockoff, same size and features. Lots of reviews on Youtube, quality seems good. It has a dashcam function where it loop records in 1,5 or 10 minute intervals. It also comes with a lot of mounts. And it costs about R1000. I am planning to get one of these, but not for a dashcam.

I have one of these http://www.eyedrive.co.za/index.php...t-deals/ed0600-mini-camera-bundle-deal-detail
Video quality isn't super amazing but for R700 it is great. Think in the future I will buy a better one. This little one's build quality shows in the price, its not a premium product but has been recording the streets of PTA for a couple of months now, no problems beyond the occasional restart and screen freeze.

@OP i really recommend http://www.eyedrive.co.za/ Had no problems with them. Whats nice about them, is you don't have to wait months/weeks for it to get delivered from China, as they keep their stock local and courier it to you.
