How do you guys monitor your data usage?

We at MTN have to monitor our own on the F@stlink dash. They have no other monitor or counter on their side.
 
be careful, the fastlink software is not 100% accurate at measuring bandwidth.

There's a functional website , vodacom4me , this works for prepaid -and- contract.

On that note: MTNs data bundle usage on MTNActive is currently DISABLED [until 18 sept apparently]
Oh and Vodacom actually SMS you when you're close to depleting your bundle..
 
Netlimiter is so far the best i've encountered. It logs per process your usage, even though the main feature is ability to -limit- bandwidth per process, i rarely actually use that. The logging abilities are impressive.

I can for example see per hour the usage of say steam.exe or firefox.exe , which is actually alot more useful than simply seeing "monthly usage" in total. This way i can determine what is in fact using my bandwidth, i.e. browsing or online gaming or updates.

Note: There's a BETA version of Netlimiter [version 3] for free, but it does NOT have the logging/statistics module, you will have to get Netlimiter 2 for that.

BitmeterII. Excellent history from hours/days/weeks/months and great reports.
Netmeter. Faster than bitmeter and can select to monitor only certain devices (eth0 vs. PPP0 vs. whatever)

On the short term, my comodo presonal firewall shows which app is using that data (active connections)

And and Vodacom4me and *111# is all good for me.

Vodacom is quite on the ball with this one.
MTN sucks. My mother in law is still haunted by data they "Claim" she used, which i know for a fact she did not.
I have all the reports from bitmeter of the first two months she apparently used 5GB on her plain GPRS phone back then.

Can't speak for any of the other software, but if you use your modem across a number of machines you can also 'port' the freebie NetMeter each time to keep a pretty accurate running total -- especially useful for MTN given that their own data counter has been hopeless for months now.

To 'port' NetMeter, make sure it's not running, then copy its entire directory from Program Files to your target computer and launch it there. Do the same in reverse when you have finished, back to the original machine etc. This way it keeps a good running total irrespective of how many machines you move your modem between. Also means you have the same settings for the application wherever you use it.

Fine. Wait for that first bill 3 months later and then have fun trying to dispute it. Go have a read up in the MTN forum and prepare yourself. ;)
