why are we letting a bunch of telkom supporters advertise on the the main portal?

"Douglas Reed, MD of Datapro, welcomes a per-gigabyte billing pricing structure. He says that per usage billing is the way forward as it helps to ensure that users get the service they pay for."

Remove this prick and his advertising.

I happen to agree with what he is saying. For the power-user, per gig billing sucks and there are alternative fixed-rate products for that. (Admittedly not very viable.) For me, per gig is great. If you look at the poll on the front page, you'll see the spilt between pro and against is about 40/60. So the jury's still out.

What would you consider a power user???
I have a 30 gig account, I will never uuse the 30gigs in the month, but I like to know that its there if I want it, that doesnt mean that Telkom can automaticaly assume that i dont need it, #*%@ it.
I dont mind even paying per gig, in any other normal country it would be cheaper for me as I know I dont use my full quota, BUT paying per gig at what price is the key.
Overseas, the more bandwidth you buy and use the cheaper it becomes, and dramtaicaly so, not so in SA.
That be the problem hombre.

Per GB pricing would be acceptable to everyone, if Telkomonopoly did not apply a linear scale to the pricing model, i.e. the price per bit/byte/MB/GB should decrease as the demand for bandwidth increases, but Telkomonopoly have in their infinite stupidity decided to do the opposite...

About removing advertising that pays for the site to stay hosted in SA, that's not going to happen...it's like telling a fellow forumite to buzz off bcos you don't agree with their reasoning, not going to happen ;).

Douglas Reed is an extremely bright guy who you should definately listen to - this guy knows his stuff. Datapro have gone from strength to strength with him at the helm.

Your insult is uncalled for imho.

I agree with Douglas Reed too. He's spot on - per-gigabyte pricing is the best way to go. That doesn't mean he agrees with the ridiculous pricing that Telkom have slapped on top of it.

What it does mean is that his knowledge of the situation in this country is rather a lot higher than yours, ganymede1

sorry juice not sure if you cant round or you need a couple of lessons in basic maths but the poll is actually 30/68 ~ 70% dont want it. i would say thats more than 2/3 majority vote... and anyways this forum is about people who care. Juice if you are happy with your 3gig cap what are you even doing here?

The point is over i would say ~90% of the posts found within these forums do not condone telkom actions or their new billing system. Last time i checked nike didnt have an addidas advert on their site.

You've completely missed the point ganymede1

I suggest you take some time to think it through before making yourself look even more stupid than you already have.

but then he should add that to his statement!

thank you bb_matt lets seperate the boys from the men here now.

Last i checked in world class standards no one charged per meg, but then again telkom/datapro are redefining world class standards.

Secondly if you all of you agree so much with the new billing system post in the main thread so everyone else can have a go at you.

Per gig billing is going backwards - it would ONLY survive in a monopoly or oligopoly / cartel situation.

Datapro is just another leech, from their initial "uncapped" solutions to their praising of Telkom per gig billing. The only guys winning this battle is Telkom and the big ISP's, who will be raking in loads of cash on the per gig scale.

Im all for making profit on a level, but this new billing scheme will have similar results as the new SA, a few elites on top(ISPs) and crapload of poor people (consumers) at the bottom.

bb_matt - if your going to tell me douglas reed did miracles for datapro, then sure, hes pushing them into more and more profit. But the same can be said about Telkom CEO's, their also going forward bigtime, but where is the consumer?

rofl

I think Telkom need to ensure that they are providing the quality of service that we are paying for, which they aren't.

Oh well. Generally, the men understand punctuation and the boys... don't. You can stand over there.

Bye now!

K guys lets get some things clarified, I may not agree with his statement on the per-gig priceing but this system HAS, and i mean has started to be implemented in other countries such as the UK. Please have a look at some of the companies in the UK, they offer per-gig billing and this phase of pricing has only just started.

It comes down to, if you want to compare us with overseas, then do it in a whole, dont just pick selective options where you can reap more benefits as a company and the consumer dies slowly.

Thats the main problem, this will put more money in Telkoms pocket, not more value in the consumers hands.

I do not believe that pay-per-gb is necessarily bad.

Ask yourself, "If the cost per GB was 10c (R0.10) would that be wrong?". No, of course not, that would give you a 300GB account for R30/month.

The issue at hand is the ludicrous R60 per GB. That is 300GB = R18 000 per month. And shaped.

And, in the end, ALL packages world wide are pay per GB. If you have a 512KB line, and download 24/7, you will use 160GB per month. That is you maximum transfer, giving the cheapest per GB price. If you pay $30 for that, you are paying $30/160 per GB at the cheapest, and if you download 1GB, you are paying $30/1 per GB.

At least, with a (true) pay per GB, you would save if you use less. We just need to argue LOUDLY against the price of R60 / GB.

Juice:Guess you going to be standing with me then... i would rather get my maths right than worry about a couple of (.)'s and (,)'s.

I want to be like you juice.
