Datsun Go! Thoughts

Guys, I am not going to change my thinking on this. I pay big money for a car to protect me and my occupants. I do not worry about pedestrian protection. You guys are not wrong in your thinking - I have just decided differently.

I am with FlashSA on this one. When looking at the NCAP ratings, I am not interested in the "Pedestrian Safety" ratings. Ockie does have some good points though, but if I am in a situation when I am swerving to avoid an accident, any pedestrians, while I will do my utmost NOT to hit them, are an afterthought.

How do you figure?

I live in the Eastern Cape. Majority of accidents involve a POS. There are also plenty of expensive prangs but that is night time vrotness most of the time. Poorest province = most unroadworthy cars on the roads.

Not sure how you extrapolate that to the rest of the country/world. I can recall a number of news reports where rich fsckers plowed into pedestrians while drunk out of their skulls.

I should add that I am not surprised the majority of car owners in SA do not give a crap about pedestrian safety ratings. We seem to be a very selfish bunch of motorist and the average attitude you can notice in driving behaviour is testament to that.

On the pedestrian topic: Would you pay R7250 for a pedestrian airbag (Volvo V40 option)?

I'm sure that will change after you killed a pedestrian and had deal with all the problems that comes with it.

How the fark does that work?

So you have an impact in one direction, then multiply the impact by an explosion in the direction of the impact. Would that not compound the problem?

Drunken madman unlikely to be driving a 5 star "pedestrian safe" vehicle...

Yeah because only poor people drink and drive....

Also, enjoy jail time when you crash into and kill someone. Your family will love to communicate to you through metal bars.

Does that actually help? I can't see it making much difference for high-speed accidents (highway). Also won't help if you hit the guy, and he lands under yours or another vehicle.

So no, I would not pay R7250 for the pedestrian airbag if I was buying a V40.

They probably developed it like that because most pedestrian accidents are front hits. Stops the person's head from slamming onto the windshield

You're basically saying that 5 star pedestrian protection will save their life. @ 120kph on the highway, a mattress on the front of my vehicle will kill them stone dead!

I'd feel terrible if it was a child. Feel rocks about an adult if they were blatantly in the wrong by being in the middle of the road.

Really? How do you get to this conclusion? I am driving at the speed limit and of a sober frame of mind, pedestrian walks into the road and I flatten them.

Charge is opened against me as a matter of course and then runs its course and is closed with no action towards me.

Where does jail come in?

Hell no - imagine the cost to repair the bonnet after this airbag goes off?

And I'll bet none of the okes giving me gears about pedestrian crash ratings would pay that either!

Agreed, even if you are found guilty of culpable homicide, unless it's a repeat offense, you'll usually get a suspended sentence and a hefty fine.

Why do you think all pedestrian accidents take place on a highway at 120km/h?
